  • Score: 95 Vintage 2021 Wine Spectator A sumptuous, polished red, saturated with plum, blackberry, boysenberry, chocolate and spice flavors. It's seamless, backed by lively acidity and firm, refined tannins. It ends with spice and a flash of wild herbs. Fine length. Merlot, Syrah, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now through 2037. Shelf Talker Full Page Review
  • Score: 93 Vintage 2021 Vinous Media The 2021 Bolgheri Rosso Superiore Stupore is redolent of blueberry jam, espresso, licorice, lavender and cloves. Bold and juicy, with terrific depth, the Stupore is classic Bolgheri. Even with all of its intensity, the 2021 has enough vibrancy to wrap it all together nicely. Shelf Talker Full Page Review
  • Score: 93 Vintage 2021 James Suckling Magazine A layered and balanced red with dark cherries, mocha, hazelnuts and stones. Medium- to full-bodied with plush tannins. Textured and structured with dark cherries on the center palate and fresh acidity. Spices and vivacity towards the long finish. Best from 2025. Shelf Talker Full Page Review
  • Score: 92 Vintage 2021 Wine Enthusiast The nose balances the depth of dark chocolate, earth and espresso with the fresh levity of mint. A burst of berries comes through on the palate, but continuing notes of mint and earth create balance. Acid prances around firm yet restrained tannins. Shelf Talker Full Page Review
  • Score: 91 Vintage 2021 Wine Advocate The Campo alle Comete 2021 Bolgheri Rosso Stupore is a blend of 50% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc and 10% Petit Verdot that is finished in a combination of neutral and new oak. The wine starts off on a dark, fruity note with stewed cherry and plum. That concentrated heaviness continues to the palate with sweet fruit and an initial zing of acidity that, although not long lasting, does break up the density of this opulent red. The effect is rich but harmonious. This is a 63,000-bottle release. Shelf Talker Full Page Review
  • Score: 93 Vintage 2020 James Suckling Sweet berries and roses with lots of rose stems and petals. Medium-bodied with firm and creamy tannins that have a minerally undertone and lovely length. Juicy acidity. Give it time to open. Better after 2024. Shelf Talker Full Page Review
  • Score: 90 Vintage 2020 Wine Advocate The Campo alle Comete 2020 Bolgheri Rosso Stupore (a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Petit Verdot) performs well. It looks like the estate did not make a Bolgheri Superiore in this vintage, and I suspect that the best fruit has been directed here instead. In fact, this is a blend from various sites, including higher-elevation vineyards at 200 meters above sea level with calcareous soils to lower vines at just 50 meters above sea level with loose soils. With dark fruit and balanced spice, the wine offers nice structure and firmness. Some 38,800 bottles were made, and this is the estate's best Rosso yet. Antonio Capaldo and his team have added seven hectares of vines with newly planted Vermentino, Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Franc (bringing the total to about 20 hectares). These are three heat-resistant varietals that are more frequently planted along the Tuscan Coast today. Campo alle Comete was charging full steam ahead when I visited before COVID-19 and seems to have lost some momentum since then. The last Bolgheri Superiore I sampled was the 2017, and there have been team changes since then and changes to the planting scheme. But starting with the 2021 vintage, fruit from the excellent Torre di Donoratico vineyard started to go on-line. This site has excellent light and ventilation. I was lucky enough to visit this magnificent vineyard and am confident of its potential. That vineyard may just be the magic touch Campo alle Comete is waiting for. Let's wait and see.
