Veneto At a Glance

  • Score: 89 Vintage 2020 Vinous Media Medicinal black cherries and savory herbs introduce the 2020 Valpolicella Classico Superiore Ripasso I Progni. This is round and soft textured, with spicy wild berry fruits. It finishes with medium length, youthfully tense, leaving the mouth watering. Shelf Talker Full Page Review
  • Score: 91 Vintage 2019 Wine Spectator Fragrant, with generous spice box, graphite and dried tea rose elements on the nose -- aromatics that wind through ripe cherry and raspberry fruit, orange peel, mocha and smoke notes. An elegant red, bright and clean-cut through the finish. Corvina and Rondinella. Drink now through 2029. 2,500 cases made, 350 cases imported. Shelf Talker Full Page Review
  • Score: 90 Vintage 2019 Vinous Media The 2018 Valpolicella Classico Superiore Ripasso I Progni lifts up dusty in character, as crushed rocks give way to shavings of cedar and sweet cherry and wild berries. Its textures are silky and enveloping, with ripe red and hints of blue fruits complemented by sweet herbs and spices, as brisk acids maintain a high-energy feel throughout. There is a subtle tinge of detectable heat; still, the 2018 tapers off incredibly fresh and leaves the mouth watering for more. Shelf Talker Full Page Review
  • Score: 93 Vintage 2018 James Suckling Magazine The ripe red-cherry, lemon-grass, charcoal and light chocolate aromas develop into a complex flavor profile on the medium to full palate, where the balance of acidity, tannin and fruit is all but perfect. Beautiful now, but will be even better after a year or two. Best in 2023. Shelf Talker Full Page Review
  • Score: 91 Vintage 2017 Wine Advocate The Le Salette 2017 Valpolicella Ripasso Classico Superiore I Progni defies the heat and the scorching temperatures of the vintage to deliver carefully balanced and elegant results. Le Salette is a champion when it comes to harnessing the inner power of Valpolicella grapes. This Ripasso opens to a dark garnet color and aromas of dark cherry, Japanese plum, toasted almond, sweet spice and cured tobacco. You get everything you need for a weekend pairing with barbecued meats. Shelf Talker Full Page Review
  • Score: 91 Vintage 2017 Wine and Spirits This ripasso, from a vineyard in Fumane, offers saturating flavors of red and black cherry laced with notes of subtle spice and almond paste. The tannins are velvety, and a hint of underbrush gives an earthy balance to the bright fruit tones. It shows typical ripasso richness yet comes across as vinous and balanced, a wine for the main course rather than for dessert. Shelf Talker Full Page Review
  • Score: 89 Vintage 2017 Vinous Media The 2017 Valpolicella Ripasso Classico Superiore I Progni is bright and fruit-forward with pretty flowery perfumes and hints of exotic spice. The textures are silky-smooth, casting notes of ripe blackberry and cherry across a medium-bodied frame. There’s a nice symmetry here, finishing fresh and crisp with violet florals and a hint of rounded tannins. Shelf Talker Full Page Review
  • Score: 91 Vintage 2016 Wine Advocate This wine does not see appassimento, but like all Ripasso, the 2016 Valpolicella Ripasso Classico Superiore I Progni is refermented on the air-dried skins left over from Amarone. The blend is 70% Corvina and Corvinone, with 30% Rondinella and Oseleta. It undergoes 18 months of aging in barrique and Slavonian oak. This is a terrific wine to pair with your favorite hamburger dressed with smoky barbecue sauce, or prime ribs, or else Santa Maria tri-tip. In other words, it's a great meat wine. Some 40,000 bottles were produced. Shelf Talker Full Page Review
  • Score: 88 Vintage 2016 Wine Enthusiast Mature dark-skinned berry, tobacco and leather aromas shape the nose. The solid palate offers blackberry jam, clove and vanilla alongside smooth tannins. Enjoy through 2023. Shelf Talker Full Page Review
