  • Score: 92 Vintage 2019 Vinous Media The 2019 Barbaresco Riserva Pora is a pretty tightly wound wine, certainly moreso than is typically the case for this Barbaresco, which is often much more engaging in the early going. Dried herbs, tobacco, cedar and earthiness lend notable savory nuance in this decidedly nervy, somber Pora. There's good fruit intensity and plenty of character that makes me want to revisit this in a few months' time. Shelf Talker Full Page Review
  • Score: 94 Vintage 2017 Wine Advocate The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Pora (with 13,333 bottles released) is usually the first wine I taste each year when I review this set of Riservas from Produttori del Barbaresco. That's because it usually appears as the most delicate, and the intensity of each successive bottle increases after this one. But these schematics are a bit more difficult to align in a hot and dry vintage such as this that produced richer and more succulent fruit across the board. The Pora is redolent of red and purple fruit with a little more blackberry and plum compared to previous editions. The tannic strength of the wine is also more elaborate. Pora works very well in 2017. Produttori del Barbaresco has been hitting it out of the ballpark these past years with a string of excellent vintages that resulted in the production of their entire line of Riservas. However, that good momentum comes to an end because the Riservas were not made in 2018. That vintage saw all the fruit blended into one non-MGA Barbaresco. And with the 2017 Riservas reviewed here, you might find these bottles hard to find. Production was 30% lower in this growing season because of a very careful fruit selection process. In fact, Aldo Vacca calls 2017 a "roller coaster vintage with frost, then hail, then a summer drought." Shelf Talker Full Page Review
  • Score: 93 Vintage 2017 Wine Spectator A rich, fruity version, this Barbaresco exudes ripe cherry fruit augmented by accents of tar, mint, earth and spice. Firms up nicely on the finish, yet stays fresh and energetic. Best from 2024 through 2040. Shelf Talker Full Page Review
  • Score: 93 Vintage 2017 Vinous Media The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Pora is rich, creamy and layered, with a bit more generosity than is typically the case. Sweet red cherry, red plum, spice and rose petal are amplified in a radiant, open-knit Barbaresco that will start drinking well in a few years' time. Shelf Talker Full Page Review
  • Score: 92 Vintage 2017 Wine Enthusiast . Balsamic aromas of camphor mingle with cedar, underbrush and dark spice. The austere palate shows dried cherry, prune soaked in spirits, licorice and clove alongside taut, closegrained tannins that leave a somewhat drying finish. Shelf Talker Full Page Review
  • Score: 95 Vintage 2016 Wine Spectator This red is saturated with bright cherry, strawberry and currant fruit. Mint, iron, tar and green, vegetal elements peek through as this evolves on the palate through the long finish. Assertive tannins put the grip on the finish, yet the intense fruit will come forward with time. Best from 2025 through 2045. 1,666 cases made, 350 cases imported. Shelf Talker Full Page Review
  • Score: 95 Vintage 2016 Wine Advocate Starting off this tasting of new Riservas from Produttori del Barbaresco is the 2016 Barbaresco Riserva Pora. This is a beautifully elegant and silky wine with a soft entry of wild berry fruit, lilac and wild rose. The bouquet opens gracefully with a fluid, slow-building intensity that feels silky and delicate to all the senses. It holds back from showing any overt or determined level of power, remaining instead silky and smooth throughout. It treads quietly and softly. Production is 13,403 bottles, and fruit is sourced from the Dellaferrera and Manzone family vineyards. I came back to this wine 24 hours after the bottle was open and added one more point to my score. Shelf Talker Full Page Review
  • Score: 95 Vintage 2016 Vinous Media The 2016 Barbaresco Riserva Pora is a brooding wine, its mid-weight structure notwithstanding. Iron, smoke, tobacco, cedar and dried flowers add a feral, earthy quality that is so appealing. Pora is often one of the more approachable Riservas in this range, but the 2016 is an exception. Readers should be prepared to cellar it for at least a few years. Shelf Talker Full Page Review
  • Score: 91 Vintage 2016 Wine Enthusiast Violet and mature berry aromas mingle with whiffs of underbrush and spice. On the firmly structured palate, blood orange, licorice and sandalwood accent a core of spirit-soaked cherries while tightly wound, fine-grained tannins provide the assertive backbone. The heat of evident alcohol lingers on the finish. Shelf Talker Full Page Review
  • Score: 95 Vintage 2015 Wine Enthusiast Underbrush, wild herb and dark-skinned-berry aromas form the nose along with a whiff of camphor. On the firm, structured palate, tightly knit but noble tannins offset dried Marasca cherry, cranberry, orange zest and star anise. Tense and youthfully austere, it needs a few years to unwind. Drink 2022–2027. Shelf Talker Full Page Review
  • Score: 94 Vintage 2015 Wine Spectator A mix of black cherry, mint, eucalyptus and tar flavors highlight this firmly structured Barbaresco, which nonetheless remains fresh and focused, with a line of dense tannins lifting the long finish. Best from 2023 through 2043. 1,388 cases made, 350 cases imported Shelf Talker Full Page Review

  • Score: 94 Vintage 2015 Wine Advocate Following the suggestion of Produttori del Barbaresco General Manager Renato Vacca, I am starting off this series of nine Riservas with the 2015 Barbaresco Riserva Pora. This wine is usually the most delicate, slender and ephemeral of this set. However, I can immediately confirm that this is not necessarily the case with this exuberant 2015 vintage. The sunny heat of the growing season has successfully drawn out more fruit weight and intensity in this edition of Pora. The wine overdelivers in terms of aromas, but its streamlined and polished personality follows through to the palate. Those divergent intensity levels will smooth out with more bottle age. Some 16,666 bottles were released. Shelf Talker Full Page Review
  • Score: 93 Vintage 2015 Vinous Media The 2015 Barbaresco Riserva Pora is round, plush and seductive. The warmth of the year comes through in the wine's soft curves and overall raciness. Sweet tobacco, cedar, mint, licorice and dried flowers add aromatic nuance to a racy Barbaresco that will drink well right out of the gate. This is such a pretty wine. Shelf Talker Full Page Review
  • Score: 94 Vintage 2014 Wine Advocate I had tasted this vintage last year as a barrel sample. Now a fully complete wine, the 2014 Barbaresco Riserva Pora did not disappoint, and even jumped up a few points. The Riserva Pora opens to dark fruit intensity with a slightly more accessible quality. Those lovely floral tones of lavender and violet are ever present. After having spent three years in oak and another year in the bottle, this wine offers a looser mouthfeel in terms of tannic structure, making it a bit more open and immediate in personality. You could uncork this bottle in 2020 if you just can't wait, but ideally, it is meant for the longer haul. Shelf Talker Full Page Review
  • Score: 94 Vintage 2014 Wine Enthusiast Menthol, woodland-berry and crushed herb aromas slowly take shape on this fragrant red. The savory palate doles out juicy Morello cherry, cranberry and licorice while bright acidity and polished tannins provide seamless support. Drink through 2029. • Score: 93 Vintage 2014 Wine Spectator Round and supple, exuding cherry, berry, licorice, eucalyptus and tar flavors. Harmonious and well-built, with a long aftertaste of menthol. Best from 2021 through 2038. 1,388 cases made, 377 cases imported. — BS Shelf Talker Full Page Review
