Score: 92Vintage 2022VinousThe 2022 Sangiovese di S. Lucia is done entirely in 18L cocciopesto amphora with no sulfur added. In this vintage, the Sangiovese is quite intense and deep, a reflection of the warm year. As always, the style is a bit on the eccentric side, but there are no awkward notes. If anything, I am quite surprised by the wine's tannic heft. This is a terrific edition of this cuvée—the aromatics alone are beguiling.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 93Vintage 2021Wine AdvocateSporting a very punchy and vibrant personality, the Castello dei Rampolla 2021 Sangiovese di S. Lucia offers an authentic and nearly transparent expression of Sangiovese from one of the most beautiful corners on the planet. With cocciopesto amphorae aging, you taste the skins of the grapes with plum and blackcurrant. There is bitter almond and lovely iris or violet-like aromas over a delicate, mid-weight delivery. This was first produced in 2010. A total of 2,336 bottles from the 2021 vintage were released.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 92Vintage 2021James SucklingOrange blossom with fresh cherries and dried flowers with some dried flower stems, following through to a medium body with tangy fruit and hints of spices. No sulfites added. Drink now.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 90Vintage 2021Vinous MediaThe 2021 Sangiovese di S. Lucia is a bold, racy wine. Ripe red cherry fruit, licorice, leather, rose petal and sweet spice are nicely amplified. The Sangiovese is done in amphora, so it has the combination of fruit purity and intensely savory aromatics that are common for wines done in this style, which is on the eccentric side.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 93Vintage 2020James SucklingThis is a fruity and flavorful red with softness and generosity. Full-bodied, round and delicious. Amphora produced, No sulphites added. Unfiltered. Drink now.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 92Vintage 2020Wine AdvocateThe Castello dei Rampolla 2020 Sangiovese di S. Lucia is fermented in a material known as "cocciopesto" in Italian. It's like an amphora made with a conglomerate of inert clays. The wine reveals a very natural and somewhat raw personality with lots of ripe cherry, blackberry and tangy plum. The mouthfeel is lean and streamlined, and although this ensemble is not too complicated, it does deliver a fun and easy drinking style. I wouldn't put my money on a long-term drinking window, and I recommended that you drink this bottle in the near term while the fruit is at its freshest.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 92Vintage 2020Vinous MediaThe 2020 Sangiovese di Santa Lucia is bold, pungent and super-expressive. A rush of dark red/purplish berry fruit, rose petal, spice, mint and lavender races across the palate as this fleshy, voluptuous Sangiovese shows off its charms. Sweet floral notes punctuate the brilliant, explosive finish. The aromatics alone are alluring, but there is plenty of grip too. I would prefer to drink the 2020 over the next few years.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 92Vintage 2019Wine EnthusiastFresh and delicious, this 100% Sangiovese has earthy aromas of sunbaked soil, truffle, leather and ripe plum. Made entirely in earthenware vessels of cocciopesto (a blend of stone, sand, marl and terra-cotta) and without added sulfites, the smooth, juicy palate doles out ripe black cherry, blackberry, baking spice and mineral alongside supple tannins. Fresh acidity keeps it balanced. It's made to be drunk young so enjoy soon.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 92Vintage 2019Vinous MediaThe 2019 Sangiovese di Santa Lucia is Rampolla's red done in amphora, with no SO2. Bright, punchy and full of character, the Sangiovese is a wine of notable personality, I would prefer to drink it sooner rather than later, while the fruit remains vibrant. Sweet floral, spice and game notes, along with that touch of reduction wines in amphora show, add to its personality.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 87Vintage 2019James SucklingA fresh, fruity red with lots of berries and hints of stems. A little edgy, too, with stewed fruit. Drink now.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 92Vintage 2018Vinous MediaRampolla's 2018 Sangiovese di Santa Lucia is 100% Sangiovese done in cocciopesto (a mix of clay and cement), which brings out the wine's intense aromatics and fruitiness. There is terrific immediacy to the 2018, but it is a wine I would prefer to drink sooner
rather than later in order to enjoy its intense, explosive flavors. A burst of dark red/purplish fruit, lavender, spice and licorice builds into the boisterous finishShelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 88Vintage 2018Wine SpectatorThe pure cherry and raspberry fruit in this red is alluring, but there is also a funky, earthy note that detracts from its purity. Mousy finish. For fans of the style. Drink now. 190 cases made, 30 cases imported. Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
