Bordering on Tuscany and right above Rome is the lesser-known and lesser-traveled region of Umbria. Without access to either the sea or international borders, it is affectionately referred to as the “green heart of Italy.”
Score: 93Vintage 2008Vinous MediaThe 2008 Montefalco Sagrantino Sacer bursts from the glass with a seductive display of crushed cherries and plums, sweet herbs, autumnal spices and hints of cocoa. This is silky and elegant in feel, offering creamy textures and a polished display of ripe red and black fruits contrasted by juicy acids and nuances of tart citrus, creating an almost-lifted and delicate impression toward the close. Those textbook Sagrantino tannins are here, but they are sweet and round, making for a structured yet harmonious finale laced with rosy inner florals and a twang of tart cranberry. The Sacer is a late-release vineyard selection that spends 12 months maturing in barriques, six of which are spent on the lees with weekly bâtonnage.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
