Region Name Umbria
Bordering on Tuscany and right above Rome is the lesser-known and lesser-traveled region of Umbria. Without access to either the sea or international borders, it is affectionately referred to as the “green heart of Italy.”

- Score: 92 Vintage 2011 Vinous Media The 2011 Montefalco Sagrantino Sacer is a dark, rich, seductive blend of crushed black cherries, shaved cedar, allspice, and cloves. It's velvety-smooth and deeply textural, with dense ripe red and black fruit waves enveloping the palate as fine-grained wood tannins slowly saturate. This finishes with dramatic length and potency, clenching the palate with a primary concentration that lingers on and on. The 2011 Sacer is built for the cellar. Bury it deep. - Score: 91 Vintage 2011 Wine Enthusiast This wine opens with scent of a spice store leaping forth. Savory, sweet and exotic spices suck you into the glass, where you'll find black plum, fig and tobacco aromas. The palate benefits from the time in the bottle as the tannins are well-integrated with flavors of black cherry pie, cinnamon, clove and vanilla, finishing with a black tea and earth note. - Score: 93 Vintage 2010 Vinous Media The 2010 Montefalco Sagrantino Sacer is dark and imposing in the glass. An air of crushed rocks gives way to balsamic spice, tobacco, plum sauce and hints of camphor. On the palate, this is like pure silk and deeply textural, gaining tension through mineral-tinged red berries and a bite of grippy tannins that saturate over time. Hints of dark chocolate and dried citrus peels linger through the long and structured finale. I love the balance here, yet the 2010 will still need a few more years of cellaring to show its best. The Sacer is a late-release vineyard selection that spends twelve months maturing in barriques, six of which are spent on the lees with weekly bâtonnage. Shelf Talker Full Page Review
- Score: 92 Vintage 2010 James Suckling Lovely aromas of bark, moss, porcini and grilled plum. Full-bodied with grainy, softening tannins. Black tea and red fruit wash over the palate with some nuance and delicacy. Some ground ginger and suede. Aging very nicely. 100% sagrantino. Drink now. Shelf Talker Full Page Review
- Score: 93 Vintage 2008 Vinous Media The 2008 Montefalco Sagrantino Sacer bursts from the glass with a seductive display of crushed cherries and plums, sweet herbs, autumnal spices and hints of cocoa. This is silky and elegant in feel, offering creamy textures and a polished display of ripe red and black fruits contrasted by juicy acids and nuances of tart citrus, creating an almost-lifted and delicate impression toward the close. Those textbook Sagrantino tannins are here, but they are sweet and round, making for a structured yet harmonious finale laced with rosy inner florals and a twang of tart cranberry. The Sacer is a late-release vineyard selection that spends 12 months maturing in barriques, six of which are spent on the lees with weekly bâtonnage. Shelf Talker Full Page Review
