Score: 91Vintage 2019VinousA dusting of cocoa and ground cloves gives way to hints of dried black cherries and sawdust as the 2019 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva evolves in the glass. It's round and soft-textured with ripe red and black fruit tones. Tinges of white pepper and allspice settle in toward the close. This leaves a cascade of inner florals and edgy tannins to linger, finishing long and staining with a licorice note that lingers on.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 91Vintage 2018James SucklingSavory walnut notes with a balsamic touch to the vanilla and dark cherry fruit. This is flavorful and creamy with juicy berries and firm, chewy tannins. Plenty of oak spices and savoriness in the lingering, lengthy finish. Drinkable now, but better in a year or two.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 89Vintage 2018Vinous MediaA darkly inviting blend of brown spice, mocha and dusty, dried black cherries introduces the 2018 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva. It's soft and supple yet lacks weight and dimension, impressing more with its purity of fruit and minerality. The 2018 tapers off staining and long. Grippy tannins create a push and pull of tension.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 92Vintage 2017James SucklingDark-cherry, dark-plum, dried-herb and mushroom aromas with some spices and walnuts. It’s medium-bodied with creamy tannins and lively acidity. Fresh and vibrant, with a chalky texture. Flavorful finish with excellent length. Drink or hold.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 89Vintage 2017Vinous MediaThe 2017 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva is understated in the glass, highlighting dusty rose, plum and dried cherry notes. This delicate expression continues on a palate that is lifted, almost juicy in feel. Minerals and minty herbs complement tart black fruits. The 2017 becomes quite tannic through the finale, leaving a bitter, sour citrus twang behind. The 2017 appears to be a victim of the warm and dry vintage, but it could also be the use of oak in combination with the year.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 93Vintage 2016Vinous MediaThe 2016 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva is dark with arching violet-tinged florals, hints of plum and Tuscan dust. Its textures are silky, communicating undeniable elegance, with a polished display of mineral-tinged wild berries contrasted by hints of sour citrus. What balance, tapering off lightly structured, with a purple and blue-toned array of residual fruits and inner herbal tones lingering on and on. This is classic but in need of some time to fully come together. The Riserva hails from Fattoria del Cerro’s higher-elevation vineyards that contain a high percentage of pebbles, fossils and shells. It’s refined in a combination of barrique and tonneaux for eight months, followed by another twelve to sixteen months in large cask.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 92Vintage 2016James SucklingA medium-bodied, structured red with aromas and flavors of cloves, cedar and dried cherries. Hint of pine. Well integrated tannins. The oak spices blend in nicely. Drink or hold.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 88Vintage 2016Wine EnthusiastRose, graphite and oak-driven aromas are front and center. The medium-bodied palate opens with prune, licorice and coffee bean before close-grained tannins shut it down with an astringent, tongue-drying close.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 92Vintage 2015James SucklingExtremely round and juicy with lovely berry and light chocolate character and hazelnut undertones. Medium body. Delicious finish. Drink now or hold.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 88Vintage 2015Wine EnthusiastThe rather shy nose eventually reveals fragrant purple-flower, mature black-skinned fruit and wild herb aromas along with a whiff of leather. On the dense but light-bodied palate, rounded, pliant tannins accompany dried cherry, clove and tobacco notes. It's already accessible so drink over the next few years to capture the remaining fruit and freshness.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 88Vintage 2015Wine EnthusiastAromas suggesting stewed prune, wild herb, French oak and a whiff of baking spice lead the nose. The palate is on the lean side, offering suggestions of dried cherry, roasted coffee bean and a hint of clove alongside grainy tannins that leave a drying finish.
