Sicily At a Glance
Region NameSicily
Sicily is Italy’s southernmost region and the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. For more than 2500 years, Sicily (Sicilia in Italian) has been a significant center of Mediterranean viniculture, although the reputation and style of its wines have changed significantly over that time.
Score: 93Vintage 2018James SucklingIntense, spicy nose with very rich, ripe mixed berries and mineral notes. Full, round and silky on the palate with lots of fruity and savory flavors coating the well-integrated, fine-grained tannins. The acidity is spot-on and delivers freshness into the long finish. Very refined expression of nero d’avola. Delicious now, but will continue to improve for a few years.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 89Vintage 2016James SucklingA slightly jammy red with plenty of raisins and desiccated fruit. Plush and fruit-forward, but lacking a sense of direction and poise. Drink now.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 88Vintage 2016Vinous MediaThe 2016 Nero d'Avola Avulisi is a dark, rich expression that mixes ripe plums and cherries with hints of brown sugar and tobacco. Its silky textures flesh out across a palate of black fruits, as grippy tannins and inner earth notes mount toward the close. This finishes structured yet balanced, revealing hints of licorice and currants. Unfortunately, I find the Avulisi to be lacking in energy and freshness.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 87Vintage 2016Wine EnthusiastMade with organically grown Nero d'Avola, this opens with aromas of roasted coffee bean, toasted oak and ripe dark-skinned berry. The assertive palate offers blackberry jam, mocha and toasted oak alongside close-grained tannins.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
