Veneto At a Glance
Region NameVeneto
Veneto is an important wine region in the northeastern corner of Italy. In terms of geography, culture, and wine styles, it represents a transition between the alpine, Germano-Slavic end of Italy and the warmer, drier, more Roman lands to the south.
Score: 89Vintage 2018Vinous MediaThe 2018 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico La Marega opens with an intense burst of medicinal cherries and blackberries, complemented by shavings of dark chocolate. This is silky in texture, with juicy acidity and depths of ripe red and blue fruits accentuated by sweet spice. The 2018 finishes staining and long with a crunchy sensation and grippy tannins, yet it remains remarkably fresh. It's a pretty intense wine, but balance is expertly maintained.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 93Vintage 2017Wine EnthusiastFor those looking for a classic Amarone, this is for you. The aromas are a mix of dried cherries, plums, savory herbs and baking spices. The palate is plush and silky smooth with gobs of spiced plums and cherries finishing with enough acidity to keep the wine from overwhelming the palate.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 93Vintage 2017Vinous MediaMasses of medicinal cherries give way to dusty rose, brown spice and mocha as the 2017 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico La Marega blossoms in the glass. This impresses with its silky and elegant textures that find wonderful lift through vibrant acidity. Its fruits are red and blue-toned with hints of cocoa and sweet violet florals that arch across the palate. This leaves hints of vanilla custard and mocha to linger incredibly long, while finishing lightly structured. The 2017 is a more fruit-forward style, but also a very nicely balanced effort for the vintage.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 94Vintage 2016Wine AdvocateThe Le Salette 2016 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico La Marega is a careful wine that shows plenty of important inner elegance and measured intensity, but it also showcases the distinctive power that comes with the appassimento process for wines made with air-dried fruit. The bouquet reveals layers of dried plum and blackcurrant, and there are plenty of savory tones, including spice, leather and smoke. La Marega will be most remembered for the studied balance it achieves throughout.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 94Vintage 2016James SucklingDeep, currant-like fruit on the nose, together with fresh flowers, some dark-chocolate orange and bright spice. The fresh and bright notes continue on the full palate with lightly firm, fruit and mineral-coated tannins. So much energy and drive here. Long, clean, mineral finish. Outstanding Amarone. Best after 2023.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 94Vintage 2016Vinous MediaYou can lose yourself in the bouquet of the 2016 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico La Marega, as violets and lavender give way to blackberries, cherry sauce, white smoke and hints of clove. The textures are like pure silk, seamlessly coasting along a medium-bodied frame while displaying a dense core of mineral-tinged black fruits. There’s beautiful symmetry here, with residual acids buffering the 2016’s fine-grained tannins. It tapers off youthfully structured yet with cooling minty herbs contrasted by hints of mocha. This is stunning. La Marega is a single-vineyard expression from the Fumane sub-region within Valpolicella Classico.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 94Vintage 2015Wine AdvocateHere is another beautiful wine from Franco Scamperle and the talented team at Le Salette. The 2015 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico La Marega is 70% Corvina and Corvinone with 30% Dindarella, Rondinella and Oseleta that sees five months of appassimento. You'll find slightly less residual sugar (with slightly less alcohol at 15.5%), which gives this wine more austerity and aromas that veer toward dark fruit, pressed blackberry, savory spice, mesquite and barbecue smoke. Try to find a ring of Bossolà or another sweet bread to serve here sliced along with Taleggio or Piave cheeses. Some 20,000 bottles were made.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 93Vintage 2015Wine and SpiritsFruit from La Marega, a cru in Fumane, yielded a bold Amarone in the heat of the 2015 vintage. Its flavors of warmed cherry, dark chocolate and baking spices weave together in a velvety texture. Already a well-integrated and complex wine with pinpoint acidity, it has fiery tannins that will benefit from at least five years of cellaring.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 93Vintage 2015Vinous MediaThe single-vineyard 2015 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico La Marega shows hints of animal musk up front, yet quickly evolves into a fruitier display of crushed stone, clove and dried strawberries. It’s soft and fleshy in feel, with violet-tinged ripe red and black fruits and minerals coasting along a core of vibrant acidity. Energy remains high throughout the finale, even as a coating of fine tannin settles in, tapering off slightly chewy to hints of raspberry and inner florals.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
