- Score: 93 Vintage 2020 James Suckling Rich, fruity nose with lots of crushed blackberries and dark cherries, colored with dark spices and a hint of smoke. Full-bodied with a concentrated and focused palate. The tannins form a sturdy frame, but the fresh fruit rides through the long finish. Drink or hold. Shelf Talker Full Page Review
- Score: 91 Vintage 2020 Vinous Media The 2020 Rosso Piceno Superiore Roggio del Filare smolders up with a rich array of plum sauce, mocha, leather, tobacco and exotic spice. It’s silky and polished, quite elegant in feel, with ripe red and blue fruits offset by candied citrus. A web of fine-grained tannins amasses toward the close. Chalky minerals and savory herbs linger as the 2020 finishes long and structured. A bump of residual acidity provides a lovely balance. Not for the faint of heart, the Roggio del Filare is a powerful blend of 70% Montepulciano and 30% Sangiovese. Shelf Talker Full Page Review
- Score: 88 Vintage 2020 Wine Enthusiast If an aroma were purple, this would be it. Aromas of plum, boysenberry, violet, licorice and oak spice define the nose. Firm and structured with a tannic edge that can be balanced by rich foods, the wine showcases dark-hued fruit flavors, roasted herbs and oak notes on the brooding finish. - Score: 94 Vintage 2019 James Suckling Profound yet intense ripe nose with rich but fresh dark cherries, earth, cocoa powder, some violet extract and fresh figs. Concentrated, full-bodied and packed with fresh blackberries, licorice and dark cherries, but nothing heavy. Juicy and long with fine, melted-chocolate tannins. Extremely heavy bottle. Drink or hold. - Score: 91 Vintage 2019 Vinous Media The darkly alluring 2019 Rosso Piceno Superiore Roggio del Filare slowly blossoms in the glass with sweet herbal tones giving way to spiced black cherries and hints of mocha. It’s silky, elegant and almost creamy in feel, with ripe black fruits and sweet inner spice, coming across as quite polished. The 2019 leaves a coating of silky tannins along with nuances of licorice, mint and plum while finishing staining and long. This is an excellent showing from Velenosi. The single vineyard Roggio del Filare is a blend of 70% Montepulciano and 30% Sangiovese. Shelf Talker Full Page Review
- Score: 90 Vintage 2019 Wine Spectator A rich, medium- to full-bodied red, with baked blackberry, fig cake and black olive flavors layered with accents of espresso, milled pepper, smoke and dark chocolate. Finely knit and creamy, with plush tannins emerging to firm the finish. Montepulciano and Sangiovese. Drink now through 2028. 2,000 cases made, 300 cases imported Shelf Talker Full Page Review
- Score: 94 Vintage 2018 James Suckling Rich black fruit with hints of iodine (almost sea urchin-like) and long-empty cigar box. Full-bodied with juicy fruit and well-integrated tannins that push out more pure fruit as they gradually firm up, to produce a long, long finish. This is still pretty much in nascent state and will need at least another couple of years for the evident complexity to spread right through the wine. Should be worth the wait. Try from 2024. - Score: 93 Vintage 2017 James Suckling Lots of very ripe plum and black fruit up front, as well as slightly grainy, earthy notes. Full-bodied with round, very fine tannins. Lots of rich, fruity flavor pushing through the center-palate and finish, together with a hint of polished wood. Good length, leaving a lightly spicy aftertaste. Drink or hold. - Score: 91 Vintage 2017 Vinous Media Wild blackberries, currants and cooling mint mixes with a hint of undergrowth and smoke as the 2017 Rosso Piceno Superiore Roggio del Filare slowly comes to life in the glass. It's rich and creamy in texture, combining sour citrus with ripe black fruits, dark chocolate and sweet spices to create a seductive display. For all of its extroverted character, balance is maintained through a mix of brisk acids and fine-grained tannins that frame the expression well. The persistence here is admirable, as is the symmetry between ripeness and structure. That said, this blend of 70% Montepulciano and 30% Sangiovese is unabashedly international in style, along with a bottle that weighs enough to strain your wrist while pouring; yet you’d be hard-pressed to deny how pleasing it is from start to finish. - Score: 88 Vintage 2014 Wine Advocate The Velenosi 2014 Rosso Piceno Superiore Roggio dei Filari is a blend of 70% Montepulciano and 30% Sangiovese that show large-scale intensity and staying power, with forward momentum pushed by the richness and ample ripeness of the fruit. The mouthfeel is compact and tight, but there is enough tannic structure to pair with some lamb sausages. The wine ages in new French barrique for up to 18 months, so expect a good amount of toast and savory spice on the close. Some 45,000 bottles were made. Shelf Talker Full Page Review
