Calabria At a Glance

Region Name Calabria

Calabria is a non-industrial rural mountainous region. Its economy is dependent on cereals, citrus, and particularly olives, with a per-capita income less than half the national average. Called Enotria by the Greeks in pre-Roma times for its illustrious vinous past, today viticulture and winemaking are far from the vital industries they once were and account for a tiny proportion of land use.

  • Score: 85 Vintage 2019 Vinous Media The 2019 Gaglioppo opens up with notes of brown sugar, cherry jam and dusty dried flowers. Its soft textures envelop the palate in ripe red fruits as a mix of brisk acids and minerals add tension toward the close. This finishes short, showing only nuances of licorice, woodland berries and an odd peppery tinge that lingers much longer than appreciated. Shelf Talker Full Page Review
  • Score: 88 Vintage 2018 Wine Enthusiast Ripe tones of blueberry and cherry meld with a mix of herbal spice on the nose. The plush, fruity palate is filled out by fleshy berry flavors, with juicy acidity and polished tannins framing it all. While not overly complex, it's a well-balanced offering that will appease those looking for a solid middle-of-the-week pour. Shelf Talker Full Page Review
