Adega Villaverde

Overview
Estate
Adega Villaverde is a family winery in Ribadumia, in the Val do Salnés subzone of the D.O. Rías Baixas, Galicia. The project was founded in 2016 by Belén Varela, whose family had been cultivating vines for decades. The winery's aim is renewing the family's wine tradition while preserving the authenticity of Albariño from O Salnés. Its vineyards are located in the heart of the Val do Salnés.
Climate
The vineyards are located in the Val do Salnés and benefit from an Atlantic climate with mild temperatures year-round, limited day-night temperature differences, and abundant but irregular rainfall.
Soil
Granite-derived and relatively sandy, rich in organic matter, acidic, fresh, permeable, and deep. The small-scale parcel structure of the Val do Salnés emphasizes the diversity of soils, orientations, and microclimates.
Vineyards
Vineyards are in the heart of the Val do Salnés. Vines are trained on traditional emparrado systems and located at approximately 328–984 feet above sea level. The estate focuses on Albariño.
Cultivation
Careful vineyard work and grape selection are central to the winery's approach. Respect for the land and tradition, and the parcel wines are made according to a minimum-intervention philosophy.
Winery
Adega Villaverde produces Albariño under the D.O. Rías Baixas. Its wines are organized into two principal families: the essential wines Just B, Croque, and Encarna, and the author-wine selection Viñas de Miguel Varela.
Family
Belén Varela founded Adega Villaverde in 2016 after a professional career that included directing an Albariño winery. The project is a return to her family's roots and tradition. The Varela family is the historical source of the winery's viticultural tradition, with knowledge passed from generation to generation.
Winemaker
Cayetano Otero and José Luis Mateo are the enologists associated with the project. Otero has more than 20 years of experience and began working as an enologist in 1994, after studying enology and viticulture at the School of Enology and Viticulture of Requena. Mateo is an award-winning enologist and taster who worked with Raúl Pérez early in his career before developing his own professional profile.
