Alexana

Overview

Estate

Alexana Estate was established in 2005 by Dr. Madaiah Revana after his search for a place in Oregon where he could pursue his passion for Burgundy-inspired Pinot Noir. He purchased an 80-acre property in the Dundee Hills and named the estate Alexana after his daughter. The winery and hospitality center were subsequently developed, with the winery completed in 2012. Today, the estate includes the original Alexana Estate Vineyard and the adjacent Kinney Ranch Estate Vineyard, planted by Dr. Revana beginning in 2019.

Climate

The estate lies in the Dundee Hills AVA, within the Red Hills of Dundee. The site's ridges and elevation create warmer nights and less frost and fog than the adjacent valley floors. Alexana Estate Vineyard ranges from approximately 320 to 650 feet above sea level, while its protected position helps moderate the dramatic weather variations experienced elsewhere in the Willamette Valley.

Soil

Alexana Estate Vineyard is exceptionally geologically diverse. The soils include ancient marine sedimentary and volcanic material, with sedimentary silt and stone, volcanic stone with clay, and predominantly sedimentary and basalt bedrock. The estate is divided into micro-blocks to match clones and rootstocks to individual soils.

Vineyards

Alexana Estate Vineyard was planted in 2003 by the previous owner and subsequently developed by Dr. Revana into 32 micro-blocks. It now has more than 55 planted acres and includes numerous Pinot Noir clones, including Pommard, Wädenswil, Coury, La Tâche, Mt. Eden, and Dijon clones 113, 114, 115, 667, 777, 828, and 943. The adjacent Kinney Ranch Estate Vineyard was planted beginning in 2019 and shares the same underlying geological setting. The current Mosaic Pinot Noir combines fruit from both estate vineyards.

Cultivation

The estate is L.I.V.E. Certified and employs sustainable, regenerative farming practices. Cover crops are used for soil health, nutrient cycling, erosion control, and water retention, and plowing is being eliminated to support carbon sequestration and microbial life. The 2023 Estate Pinot Noir marked an important transition toward organic certification, according to the winery. Hand harvesting and triple sorting are documented for current wines.

Winery

Alexana uses a gravity-flow winery and small-lot fermentations with native yeasts. The current winemaking philosophy emphasizes restrained extraction and allowing each vineyard block and vintage to express itself. The winery produces Estate, Soil & Clones, Single Vineyard, Cellar, and Icon series wines.

Family

Alexana is part of Dr. Madaiah Revana's family of winegrowing estates. The property was named after his daughter, Alexana. Dr. Revana remains founder and proprietor, while the Oregon operation has developed its own local winegrowing and winemaking team. The project connects his interest in Burgundy and Pinot Noir with the distinctive terroir of the Dundee Hills.

Winemaker

Tresider Burns is the current Winemaker at Alexana. A native Oregonian, he studied Fermentation Sciences at Oregon State University after an earlier career in technology. His winemaking experience includes Lemelson Vineyards, Brittan Vineyards, and White Rose Estate. He joined Alexana in May 2022. Julia Cresto is Associate Winemaker; she studied Fermentation Science at Oregon State University and has worked in Oregon, Napa, New Zealand, and Australia, including nearly a decade with Luisa Ponzi.
