Bodega Pincerna

Overview

Estate

Bodegas Pincerna is a small winery based in Grajal de Campos, León, within the D.O. León. The project is centered on recovering and preserving old vineyards and on expressing two local grape varieties: Prieto Picudo for red and rosé wines and Albarín Blanco for whites. It's a project created by several partners united by a shared interest in the wine heritage of León.

Climate

The vineyards are located at an elevation of around 2,624 feet above sea level in the southern part of León. Altitude and the area's continental conditions contribute to significant temperature differences between day and night, helping preserve acidity while allowing the grapes to ripen. Pincerna works with vineyard sites in Grajal de Campos, Villacalviel, and Gordoncillo, each selected for the interaction of altitude, soil, and grape variety.

Soil

Pincerna works with several distinct soil profiles. Villacalviel has silty-clay soil and is used for old-vine Prieto Picudo. Gordoncillo has silty clay with significant sand and stones and lies near the Cea River, providing the basis for Albarín Blanco. Grajal de Campos has sandy-clay soil that is relatively acidic and low in organic matter, contributing to the freshness of the resulting wines.

Vineyards

The winery's vineyard work is centered on old and heritage parcels. Villacalviel contains 90–100-year-old Prieto Picudo vines at an elevation of approximately 2,624 feet. Grajal de Campos has approximately 30-year-old Prieto Picudo at 2,624 feet. Gordoncillo has approximately 35-year-old Albarín Blanco at the same altitude. The winery also works with younger Prieto Picudo vineyards of approximately 20–30 years for its young red and 25–30 years for its rosé. Some historic parcels contain a mix of local varieties alongside Prieto Picudo.

Cultivation

The vineyard management is ecological in approach, with a philosophy of minimizing intervention and recovering old vineyards. The winery emphasizes pruning and appropriate vineyard work rather than reliance on chemical herbicides. In Prieto Picudo, the team uses aerial pruning in some vineyards instead of the traditional low-growing system, with the aim of keeping bunches away from the soil.

Winery

Pincerna follows a low-intervention approach in both the vineyard and the cellar. Its young Prieto Picudo is fermented and undergoes malolactic fermentation in stainless steel. Sumiller combines Prieto Picudo from mainly old vineyards with barrel aging, while La Retorcida comes from 90–110-year-old vines and is aged in oak for just under a year. The portfolio also includes Albarín Blanco wines and a rosé based on young Prieto Picudo, with the latter made using a brief maceration technique involving Albarín must.

Family

Pincerna is a project created by a group of partners. Alfonso Bazaga and Gabriel García Luengos are the project's principal founders.

Winemaker

The enologist, Andrés Martín, helps recover abandoned 90–110-year-old vineyards that supply La Retorcida. The winery's approach places considerable emphasis on vineyard work as the foundation of the wines, with cellar intervention kept deliberately limited.

Focus Point

• Small producer in Grajal de Campos, D.O. León. • Strong focus on the indigenous Prieto Picudo and Albarín Blanco varieties. • Recovery and preservation of old and centenarian vineyards. • Ecological vineyard approach and minimal intervention.
