Boedecker Cellars

Overview
Estate
Boedecker Cellars was founded in 2003. What began as a 400-case production in Oregon’s first shared-use winery in Carlton has grown into a 5,500-case, winemaker-owned operation. Today, they craft their wines in a restored 1956 warehouse in the heart of Northwest Portland—less than an hour from the vineyards they work closely with.
Climate
The Willamette Valley in Oregon has a Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters. Spring daytime temperatures (April-June) are in the 50s to 60s with sunshine and showers. Summers (July-August) are long, sunny, and dry, with temperatures in the 70s and 80s, sometimes reaching the 90s
Soil
The Willamette Valley AVA features fertile alluvial soils in the valley and volcanic, loess-sand, silt, clay, and sediment soils on hillsides. The Chehalem Mountains AVA covers 100 miles of sedimentary sea beds and lava flows. The Yamhill-Carlton AVA contains coarse marine sediments.
Vineyards
The vineyards are all within the Willamette Valley AVA, and they have a variety of elevations, soils, and climate terroirs. Boedecker holds lease ownership partnerships and has farming control over every step of the vine’s life. Each is sustainably, if not organically, farmed and selected for the variety of soils, elevations, meso-climates in the vineyard, and micro-climates within the blocks.
Cultivation
Boedecker practices sustainable farming methods, such as under-vine cultivation to avoid herbicides, nutrient-enhancing cover crops, and the use of organic materials to control mildew and pests.
Winery
Boedecker Cellars is an urban winery in downtown Portland, Oregon, that sources its Pinot Noir grapes from select vineyards throughout the Willamette Valley. The utilization of French wood 226L barrels enhances the characteristics of the grapes.
Family
Over the years, Athena and Stewart have grown a tight-knit community of passionate, slightly wine-obsessed individuals—each one bringing a little chaos, a lot of heart, and a deep love for Pinot Noir. And when it’s time to bring in the fruit, it becomes a full-on team effort. Friends, family, and an incredible crew of community members roll up their sleeves to participate in the joy (and serious hard work!) of making wine.
Winemaker
Husband and wife team Stewart and Athena Boedecker, both UC Davis graduates, craft their wines, showcasing a balance between Stewart’s preference for ethereal and perfumed Pinot Noirs and Athena’s desire for bold, spicy, and robust flavors.
