Campo alle Comete

Overview
Estate
Campo alle Comete is a winery in Bolgheri, established in 2016 by Antonio Capaldo, who owns Feudi di San Gregorio. The estate spans 28 hectares of vineyards and specializes in high-quality wines, primarily in the Bordeaux style, using grape varieties such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. The name reflects the brightness of the area.
Climate
Proximity to the Mediterranean Sea positively affects climate mitigation. Winters are usually mild, and summers are hot and dry, cooled by nighttime temperature fluctuations and sea breezes.
Soil
The estate is quite diverse, with three main areas identified. The vineyards nearest the sea feature a large sandy component. The vineyards surrounding the winery blend the red sands of Bolgheri with a significant amount of clay. Conversely, the hillside plots have a notably rich skeletal structure.
Vineyards
The total area covers 28 hectares. The varieties grown are typical of the region: Vermentino and Sauvignon Blanc for whites, and Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc for reds. 2 hectares of Syrah and Grenache are also cultivated, primarily for our rosé.
Cultivation
The Merlot grapes from the oldest vineyards (2001) are trained using the spurred cordon method. About 2.8 hectares are planted with vines using the espalier method, while in the other plots the vines are trained using the Guyot method. The approach to the vineyards is very thoughtful to ensure the health of the plants and their balance with the surrounding environment.
Winery
The circular design echoes the architectural style of ancient Etruscan tombs in the region.
Inside, stainless-steel tanks and tulip-shaped concrete vats are present. To complete the wine aging, French oak tonneaux and barriques are stored in the semicircular barrel cellar.
Family
Antonio Capaldo, former owner of Feudi di San Gregorio, purchased Campo alle Comete in 2016. His family introduced southern Italian terroir to Bolgheri and adapted their Irpinia expertise to the local style. In 2018, Capaldo leased 2 hectares on the Torre di Donoratico hill, enhancing Campo alle Comete’s quality and winemaking potential.
Winemaker
Lucia Minoggio, originally from Piedmont, earned a degree in viticulture and oenology from the University of Florence. After gaining initial experience in Chianti Classico, she expanded her training by working in New Zealand, California, and France. Upon returning to Italy, she served as an oenologist at Castello di Nipozzano in Chianti Rufina. In 2021, she began her career at Campo alle Comete.
