Overview
Estate
Granville Wine Co. is a small family-owned winegrower and winery in the Dundee Hills of Oregon's Willamette Valley, founded in 2014 by second-generation winegrowers Jackson and Ayla Holstein. The project began with the return to Oregon and the hand-farming of Holstein Estate, Jackson's family vineyard. Granville has since developed partnerships with growers in the Dundee Hills and Eola-Amity Hills while establishing additional vineyard parcels of its own. The winery focuses primarily on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, with a growing traditional-method sparkling program.
Climate
Granville's vineyards are located in the Willamette Valley, principally in the Dundee Hills and Eola-Amity Hills. The site experiences a cool, maritime-influenced climate, with elevation and exposure playing important roles in ripening. At Koosah Vineyard in the Eola-Amity Hills, for example, the highest blocks sit at approximately 800–1,100 feet and are exposed to Pacific air. Granville's vineyard philosophy is to observe each site's seasonal development rather than apply a uniform formula.
Soil
The Dundee Hills are strongly associated with red Jory soils derived from volcanic basalt. Granville's current Holstein Estate is rooted in this red volcanic landscape. Across the wider program, the winery works with a range of volcanic terroirs in the Dundee and Eola-Amity Hills. The current vineyard portfolio includes sites with differing basalt composition, depth, and decomposition, which Granville studies as individual expressions of place.
Vineyards
Holstein Estate is the family's founding vineyard in the Dundee Hills, established by Jackson's father. Granville also works with sites including Dux Vineyard and Koosah Vineyard in the Eola-Amity Hills, as well as Temperance Hill Vineyard. Koosah is planted at high elevation and includes Pinot Noir and Chardonnay blocks; Granville sources Pinot Noir from Blocks 1, 9, and 13 and Chardonnay from Blocks 5 and 7. Temperance Hill contributes two acres of Pommard-clone Pinot Noir from its North Block at approximately 820 feet. The current program also includes newly established parcels such as Nova Ridge.
Cultivation
The vineyards are organically tended, without irrigation or synthetic inputs. Vine vigor is managed with compost and diverse annual and perennial cover crops, while yields are monitored throughout the growing season. The team uses tressage, an Old World canopy-management technique, to help optimize ripening chemistry. Granville emphasizes direct involvement in the vineyards and describes its approach as that of a vigneron, growing the fruit and making the wine without handing either process off.
Winery
Granville's winemaking is guided by observation and vintage variation. Ambient yeast is used for fermentation. Red wines receive significant stem contact and ferment in small vessels of different materials before élevage in large-format barrels selected for each wine. Whites are whole-cluster pressed, with occasional light skin contact, and are fermented separately from the reds. Granville combines oxidative and reductive techniques according to the vintage and often leaves malolactic fermentation incomplete to preserve natural acidity and freshness. Production remains deliberately small, with every barrel tasted before bottling.
Family
Granville was founded by Jackson and Ayla Holstein, both second-generation members of Oregon's wine industry. Jackson grew up among Willamette Valley vineyards and learned viticulture from his father, who established estate vineyards for the Drouhin family and Argyle during the 1980s and 1990s. Ayla also grew up in the Dundee Hills and gained experience through Oregon, New Zealand, and Australian harvests before working as a local restaurant wine buyer. They returned to the Dundee Hills in 2014 and built Granville around the family's Holstein Estate vineyard.
Winemaker
Jackson Holstein is Granville's winemaker and vineyard lead. He is the first winemaker in his family and has worked vintages in Australia, New Zealand, and Oregon. His background in vineyard management strongly informs Granville's winemaking, with decisions based on direct observation of each site and vintage. Ayla Holstein leads business operations and hospitality and participates in cellar work during harvest and assemblage.
