Gro Wines

Overview
Estate
GRO Wines is a Napa Valley wine brand founded with the 2009 vintage by husband-and-wife winemakers Lars Bjorkman and Molly Hill. GRO is the Swedish word for “to germinate.” The brand’s identity is closely connected to Lars Bjorkman’s Swedish heritage and his interest in the relationship between site, landscape, and flavor.
Climate
GRO’s vineyards are located in Napa Valley hillside sites. Howell Mountain combines cooler temperatures with near-constant sun exposure, while Mt. Veeder benefits from the cooling influence of San Pablo Bay. The Haspel Vineyard site on Mt. Veeder is ripening slowly due to its elevation, marine influence, and varied vineyard aspects.
Soil
Polaris Vineyard on Howell Mountain has red clay and volcanic ash. Haspel Vineyard on Mt. Veeder has rugged volcanic soils.
Family
Lars Bjorkman and Molly Hill, a husband-and-wife winemaking team, created GRO Wines. Lars grew up in Fresno in a family that had emigrated from Sweden; Molly grew up in Santa Barbara. The couple met in Napa and has two children. GRO is therefore a family wine label, built around the professional partnership of two winemakers.
Winemaker
Lars Bjorkman is the winemaker and proprietor. He was born in Fresno to a family from Sweden and earned a degree in viticulture and enology from the University of California, Davis. His professional experience includes Gloria Ferrer, R.H. Phillips, BRL Hardy’s in Australia, Flora Springs, and Saddleback in Oakville, where he makes wine with Nils Venge. Molly Hill is the other proprietor. She also studied viticulture and enology at UC Davis and has worked at Beringer, Domaine Carneros, Seasmoke Cellars, Vina Isidro in Chile, and Sequoia Grove, where she was winemaker for many years.
