Hospices de Beaune

Overview
Estate
The Domaine viticole des Hospices de Beaune is the wine estate of the Hospices Civils de Beaune, the historic charitable hospital institution founded in 1443 by Nicolas Rolin and Guigone de Salins. Unlike a conventional family domaine, the estate was built over centuries through bequests and donations of vineyards to the institution. Today it covers approximately 60 hectares across some of Burgundy's most prestigious appellations. Its wines are sold en primeur each year at the famous Hospices de Beaune charity auction, traditionally held on the third Sunday of November.
Climate
The climate has a continental influence: hot summers and dry autumns allow the grapes to ripen in ideal conditions. These climatic conditions encourage the development of sugars and the substances that give the grapes their colour.
Vineyards
The Domaine farms approximately 60 hectares and produces 53 historic cuvées each year. Pinot Noir accounts for 35 different red cuvées and Chardonnay for 18 white cuvées. The institution has generally retained vineyards producing Premier Cru and Grand Cru wines, with holdings across major Burgundy appellations. All vineyard parcels in the estate have entered the Hospices patrimony through donations or bequests.
Cultivation
Ludivine Griveau, régisseur of the Domaine since 2015, is responsible for managing the 60 hectares and a team of 23 employees. The vineyard is managed with a rigorous focus on quality and long-term sustainability.
Winery
The Domaine's production is organized around the individual cuvées created from its many Burgundy climats. Ludivine Griveau and her deputy prepare the annual cuvées for the auction. The wines are sold in 228-liter Burgundy barrels, traditionally called 'pièces', as wines of the current vintage and are subsequently aged and bottled by the buyers. This means that the Hospices de Beaune model differs from a conventional domaine that sells a finished estate-bottled range: the annual auction is an integral part of its production and commercial system.
Winemaker
Ludivine Griveau has been régisseur of the Domaine viticole des Hospices de Beaune since 2015. She is responsible for managing the 60 hectares and, together with her deputy, for preparing the 53 historic cuvées offered at the annual auction.
