Hospices the Nuits-Saint-Georges

Overview
Estate
The Domaine viticole des Hospices de Nuits-Saint-Georges is the wine estate belonging to the Hospices de Nuits-Saint-Georges hospital. Its origins date to 1270, and its vineyard has been built over centuries through donations and bequests to the hospital, particularly from local families. Today, the Domaine covers 12.4 hectares, is integrated into the hospital institution, and operates with its own budget. The profits generated by the wine estate contribute to hospital investments and the institution's care mission. The Domaine is concentrated in the Côte de Nuits, with a particular focus on Nuits-Saint-Georges.
Climate
The climate has a continental influence: hot summers and dry autumns allow the grapes to ripen in ideal conditions. These climatic conditions encourage the development of sugars and the substances that give the grapes their color.
Vineyards
The Domaine extends over 12.4 hectares across Nuits-Saint-Georges, Premeaux-Prissey, Vosne-Romanée and Gevrey-Chambertin. It is composed mainly of Nuits-Saint-Georges wines, with six village parcels and nine Premier Cru sites. The estate produces 19 cuvées when vintage conditions permit. One of its distinctive holdings is Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Didiers, a monopole. The range also includes Gevrey-Chambertin Village and Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Terres Blanches, a white wine from the Domaine.
Cultivation
The Domaine practices integrated viticulture. Vineyard work includes manual harvesting and rigorous sorting, and the estate is supported by a permanent vineyard team and seasonal workers during the year and harvest. The arrival of Laurence Danel in 2026 brings an explicit intention to strengthen environmentally responsible practices.
Winery
The Domaine has operated with a modern winery since 2002. Its wines are made parcel by parcel, with the aim of preserving the individual expression of each climat. The estate's annual production is presented as 19 distinct cuvées, principally from Nuits-Saint-Georges. Wines are sold through the annual Hospices de Nuits-Saint-Georges en primeur auction, where the vintage is offered in barrels.
Winemaker
Laurence Danel became the new régisseuse of the Domaine on 2 January 2026, succeeding Jean-Marc Moron. A qualified oenologist since 2003, she first discovered Burgundy through harvest work at Domaine des Perdrix in Premeaux-Prissey. She subsequently worked at Bouchard Père & Fils, in oenological consulting, and at Domaine Faiveley. Her stated priorities include preserving the identity of the individual terroirs while moving the Domaine toward more environmentally responsible practices. The 2026 vintage is her first vintage at the Hospices de Nuits.
