LaFou Celler

Overview
Estate
LaFou Celler is a winery in Batea, in the Terra Alta D.O. of Catalonia, founded in 2007 as the personal project of Ramon Roqueta Segalés. The project was created specifically to explore the potential of Garnacha in Terra Alta and to express the landscape's identity through small-scale, terroir-focused wines. The winery is housed in Casa Figueras, an 18th-century stately property in the historic center of Batea, carefully restored while preserving its historic winemaking elements.
Climate
The vineyards lie at approximately 1,115–1,247 feet above sea level in the hills and valleys north of Batea. The climate is Mediterranean with a strong continental influence. Two characteristic winds shape the vineyard conditions: the Garbinada helps moderate summer heat, while the dry Cierzo lowers humidity and contributes to healthy grapes, allowing the team to wait for full physiological ripeness before harvest.
Soil
LaFou's vineyards are predominantly limestone, with clay-silt loam textures. Some areas have a distinctive sandy surface associated with fossil dunes. The combination of limestone, fossil-dune material, terraces, and elevation is central to the expression of Garnacha.
Vineyards
LaFou owns 60 hectares of land north of Batea, of which approximately 15 hectares are planted to vines. The vineyards occupy valleys, ravines, and terraces at 1,115–1,247 feet. Main plantings include Red Garnacha, Garnacha Peluda, White Garnacha, and Syrah, with smaller parcels of Morenillo and Samsó/Cariñena, reflecting the winery's work to recover traditional varieties.
Cultivation
The vineyard philosophy is based on preserving the traditional landscape of Terra Alta, where vines grow alongside olive and almond trees. The terraced landscape helps collect the area's scarce rainfall. LaFou's strives for conscious viticulture, soil care, and the preservation of traditional varieties.
Family
LaFou was founded by Ramon Roqueta Segalés, a member of the Roqueta family, whose documented winemaking history dates back to 1199. The project was conceived as a personal expression of the family member who became particularly interested in Garnacha while studying enology in France. Rather than reproducing the style of the family's other properties, Ramon established LaFou specifically to explore Terra Alta and its traditional varieties.
Winemaker
Ramon Roqueta Segalés is the owner and winemaker/oenologist of LaFou Celler. His interest in Garnacha developed while studying enology in France and led him to seek out a territory where the variety could show freshness, elegance, and authenticity. He remains closely involved in the vineyard, cellar, and project communications and presented LaFou wines at Barcelona Wine Week in 2026.
