Mas de Janiny

Overview
Estate
Mas de Janiny is a family estate in Saint-Bauzille-de-la-Sylve, around 30 minutes from Montpellier and approximately one hour from Béziers. The property lies on the hillsides of the Languedoc overlooking the Hérault valley.
Climate
Mediterranean climate under maritime influence, with good sunshine, mild winters, and hot summers. Sea winds bring freshness and an oceanic influence to the grapes, while the frequent Tramontane contributes to the low rainfall.
Soil
The vineyards are planted on clay-limestone soils, in and around the garrigue. Selected old-vine parcels on very stony hillsides, including the sites used for its Grés de Montpellier wines.
Vineyards
Mas de Janiny's vineyards are located around Saint-Bauzille-de-la-Sylve, with vines positioned at the edge of and within the garrigue. Old, very stony vines at approximately 328 feet altitude for its Côteaux du Languedoc / Grés de Montpellier cuvées. The main red varieties documented across the range include Syrah, Grenache, and Carignan. Other estate wines also use Sauvignon, Rolle, Chardonnay, Viognier, Cinsault, and Pinot Noir.
Cultivation
The estate has been farmed organically since the late 1980s. Vines are cultivated without herbicides, synthetic products, or chemical fertilizers. The estate uses biodynamic preparations, grass cover between rows, and a flock of sheep to reduce tractor passes and encourage biodiversity. Manual harvesting is used for low-yielding vines classified within protected-origin appellations, following laboratory maturity checks and tasting.
Winery
Vinification is carried out parcel by parcel and variety by variety, with each grape variety vinified separately. Gentle extraction, stainless-steel fermentation, regular pumpovers and délestages, and very low sulfur additions. Some selected cuvées are aged in barrels. The estate also produces wines without added sulfites, sparkling wines, and several appellations, including AOP Languedoc and AOP Grés de Montpellier.
Family
The Julien family has been connected with the vineyard for more than a century. Alfred, four generations ago, continued the family vineyards and helped establish the local cooperative cellar. Thierry and Pascal Julien took over the family vineyard in the late 1980s and immediately moved it to organic farming. In 2020, the next generation joined: Xavier and Anne-Laure, Pascal's children, followed by Thibault, Thierry's son.
Winemaker
Xavier Julien is the winemaker of Mas de Janiny.
