San Leonardo

Overview
Estate
Tenuta San Leonardo is one of Italy’s most iconic estates, located in Trentino’s Vallagarina valley. Owned by the Marchesi Guerrieri Gonzaga family for more than three centuries, the estate spans approximately 300 hectares, combining vineyards, woodlands, and agricultural land within a unique Alpine environment often described as the 'Sassicaia of the North'.
Climate
A rare meeting point of Alpine and Mediterranean influences. Cool mountain air descends from the Alps, while the Ora del Garda moderates temperatures, creating long growing seasons, pronounced diurnal variation, and exceptional aromatic complexity.
Soil
The vineyards are planted in alluvial soils composed of gravel, sand, limestone, and river deposits. Excellent drainage and low fertility naturally limit vigor and favor wines of finesse, longevity, and precision.
Vineyards
Around 35 hectares under vine, planted mainly with Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère, and Merlot alongside indigenous varieties. Many parcels are surrounded by forests and natural barriers, which contribute to biodiversity and a distinct microclimate.
Cultivation
Sustainable viticulture with meticulous parcel management and extensive manual work in the vineyard. Particular attention is devoted to preserving old Carmenère vineyards, which have become a defining feature of the estate.
Winery
Traditional winemaking remains central to San Leonardo’s identity. Fermentation occurs in concrete tanks, followed by extended aging in French oak barriques. The philosophy favors elegance, balance, and aging potential over concentration.
Family
The Guerrieri Gonzaga family has shaped the estate for generations. Marchese Carlo Guerrieri Gonzaga transformed San Leonardo into one of Italy’s benchmark Bordeaux-style blends, establishing an enduring international reputation while preserving its aristocratic agricultural heritage. The estate is now managed by Marchese Carlo’s son, Anselmo Guerrieri Gonzaga.
Winemaker
Carlo Ferrini. Working alongside the Guerrieri Gonzaga family, Ferrini brings technical precision while respecting the estate’s classical style, helping preserve San Leonardo’s elegance and recognizable identity.
