Staglin Family Vineyard

Overview

Estate

Staglin Family Vineyard is a family-owned estate on the Rutherford Bench in Napa Valley, California. The Staglin family purchased the historic property in 1985 and has farmed the estate for more than four decades. The property comprises 61 acres, with approximately 51 acres currently planted to vines. The estate combines a historic Rutherford vineyard with an underground production facility completed in 2002.

Climate

The Rutherford estate benefits from sun-drenched days and cool evenings. Its position at the base of the western slopes of the Mayacamas Range gives the vineyard a distinctive Rutherford Bench setting. The estate's wines are made to express the site's specific character, with Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and other varieties suited to the property's conditions.

Soil

The 61-acre property lies on an alluvial fan containing rich volcanic soils at the base of Mount St. John. The estate describes these soils, together with the site's location and microclimate, as fundamental to the character of its Rutherford vineyard.

Vineyards

The estate vineyard is approximately 51 acres of vines within the 61-acre property and is certified organic. Cabernet Sauvignon is the principal variety, alongside Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Sangiovese. The estate's history goes back to the 1860s, when approximately 60 acres surrounding the original homestead were planted to grapes. In the 1960s, under the guidance of André Tchelistcheff, new vines were planted for Beaulieu Vineyard's Georges de Latour Private Reserve program.

Cultivation

Staglin farms the vineyard organically and describes the estate as a certified organic property. The family also uses solar power as part of its approach to the land and winery. Vineyard management is overseen by David Abreu, who is listed as Vineyard Manager on the current estate team. The winery emphasizes careful stewardship of the historic property and its surrounding ecosystem.

Winery

The 24,000-square-foot underground production facility was completed in 2002 and is built beneath a steep hillside overlooking the vines. The caves provide naturally cool, stable conditions and reduce the energy required for cooling and the wine lost to evaporation. The winery uses small-lot, estate-focused production. Chardonnay is made using whole-cluster pressing and barrel fermentation, while the red wines are aged extensively in French oak. Historical estate releases show long barrel-aging periods and high proportions of new French oak.

Family

The Staglin family purchased the Rutherford estate in 1985. The current team includes Garen Staglin as Co-owner, Shari Staglin as CEO / Co-owner, Shannon Staglin as President, and Brandon Staglin as Chief Advocacy and Engagement Officer for One Mind. The family's wine project is closely connected to its philanthropic work, particularly through the Staglin Family Vineyard Music Festival and support for brain-health research.

Winemaker

Fredrik Johansson is the current Director of Winemaking. The current Staglin team also includes David Abreu as Vineyard Manager. The estate's winemaking history includes a close relationship with André Tchelistcheff, who worked with the Staglins after their acquisition of the property and helped bridge the gap to his knowledge of the Rutherford site from its earlier history.
