Sumarroca

Overview

Estate

Bodegues Sumarroca is a family winery in the Penedès region of Catalonia, with its winery at the Molí Coloma estate in Subirats. The family's winemaking roots go back to Llimiana in Pallars Jussà, where several generations cultivated vineyards. In the early 1980s, Carles Sumarroca moved to Penedès and acquired the Molí Coloma and Heretat Sabartés estates. In 1999, the family acquired the former Marquis of Monistrol estate in Sant Sadurní d'Anoia and renamed it Finca Sumarroca. The winery states that its vineyards cover 464.8 hectares across three estates and that it is self-sufficient in grapes for its wines and sparkling wines.

Climate

Sumarroca's vineyards are in the Penedès, with a Mediterranean climate. Finca Sumarroca is south-facing and protected by the Montserrat mountain range, influenced by the Mediterranean coastal climate and the inland “terral” wind. Heretat Sabartés is in the southernmost part of Penedès and is characterized by a strong maritime influence, as it is only a few kilometers from the sea.

Soil

Soils vary by estate and plot. Finca Sumarroca has chalky clay loam with low to medium organic matter. Heretat Sabartés has clay and silt. The Garrofer Syrah plot in the Santa Creu section of Finca Sumarroca has very low organic matter, high limestone content, and deep gravel deposits.

Vineyards

The vineyards are divided among three estates: Molí Coloma in Subirats, Heretat Sabartés in Banyeres del Penedès, and Finca Sumarroca in Monistrol d'Anoia / Sant Sadurní d'Anoia. Together they cover 464.8 hectares. Finca Sumarroca alone covers 403.8 hectares and is divided into more than 100 vineyards or plots. White varieties include Parellada, Macabeo, Xarel·lo, Xarel·lo Vermell, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Muscat, and Gewürztraminer; red varieties include Tempranillo, Merlot, Grenache, Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Cultivation

Sumarroca practices responsible and organic viticulture across its estate vineyards. The estate is 100% organic, with no nitrogen fertilizers, self-produced organic compost, biodiversity management, and predictive models for targeted pest control. Finca Sumarroca also contains an experimental vineyard of fungus-resistant PIWI varieties, intended to reduce the use of copper and sulfur.

Winery

The winery is located at Molí Coloma and controls the production chain from the vineyard to the bottle, as it produces all the grapes it needs from its own estates. Sumarroca combines traditional winemaking with innovation, focusing on freshness, elegance, and smoothness. Its portfolio includes Cava, white, red, and rosé wines.

Family

The Sumarroca family has several generations of vineyard-growing roots in Llimiana, Pallars Jussà. Carles Sumarroca established the family's Penedès project in the early 1980s. The current winery continues as a family business, combining family involvement with a consolidated professional team.

Winemaker

The winemaking is led by Óscar Llombart, who coordinates a team of four winemaking specialists.

Focus Point

• 100% self-sufficient in grapes. • Organic cultivation of more than 400 hectares. • Soils include calcareous clay-loam, gravel, clay and silt, depending on estate and plot. • PIWI experimental vineyard at Finca Sumarroca. • Biodiversity programme including native fauna, bees and bat habitat.
