Voces Cellars

Overview
Estate
Voces Cellars is a boutique Napa Valley wine producer founded by Fernando Candelario in 2002. The winery is a premium Latino family-owned winery with Candelario as a first-generation winemaker in Napa Valley. Voces focuses on small-batch wines made from locally sourced California grapes.
Climate
Intense hot days and chilly nights. This significant day-to-night temperature variation contributes to lush fruit and, together with the age of the vines, is part of what defines the wines.
Soil
The soils at Frediani Vineyard are rocky gravel and bale clay loam.
Vineyards
The historic Frediani Vineyard is the home of Voces Cellars' grapes. The Frediani family has been growing grapes in Napa Valley since 1898, and these vines were planted in 1935. Jim Frediani is a third-generation Italian grower. Voces has known the family since 2001 and has acquired some of the best fruit in the valley.
Cultivation
Every cluster is hand-harvested during cool nights to maintain the grapes' natural acidity. Vineyard selections are hand-sorted before entering the winery. Some imperfect clusters are kept because they can add complexity to the wines.
Winery
Voces Cellars describes a small-batch, meticulous winemaking process. Grapes are destemmed and placed in stainless-steel fermentation tanks after hand sorting. Before fermentation, the fruit undergoes a two- to three-day cold soak. Fermentation is slow, followed by a long, warm maceration in temperature-controlled tanks. Free-run wine is transferred to new French oak barrels, while pressed wine is aged separately, and a portion may be incorporated into the final wine for additional structure. Secondary fermentation takes place in the barrel, followed by topping, racking, and fining. The winery uses organic egg whites for clarification. The wines ferment/age for approximately a year and a half before final selection through blind trials, with filtration at bottling, and then receive approximately two additional years of bottle age before release. Wines are aged in American and French oak for 12–18 months and are often cellared for another 2–4 years.
Winemaker
Fernando Candelario is the founder, owner, and winemaker of Voces Cellars. He worked for eight years in the cellar at Robert Mondavi Winery before becoming cellar master at T-Vine Cellars in Calistoga, where he worked with vintner Greg Brown. He launched Voces Cellars in 2002. His stated philosophy is to make fruit-forward wines using natural winemaking processes while not interfering too much with what the vineyard has given him.
