Allram

Overview

Estate

Weingut Allram is a family-owned estate based in Straß im Straßertale, in the Kamptal wine-growing region of Lower Austria. The estate today farms around 30 hectares of vineyards and is a member of the Österreichische Traditionsweingüter (Traditional Austrian Wineries).

Climate

Kamptal lies at the meeting point of two contrasting climatic influences: warm, dry Pannonian air from the east and cooler air flowing from the Waldviertel to the north-west. The result is a characteristic combination of warm days and cool nights, particularly during summer, followed by long, sunny autumn periods. This temperature contrast contributes to aromatic finesse and lively acidity, while the region's topography helps create wines with strong aging potential.

Soil

The soils around Straß are highly diverse and are an important part of Allram's site-driven approach. Depending on the vineyard, they include loess, loamy and calcareous sandy silt, gneiss, mica schist, amphibolite, marine sediments, and ancient Danube gravels. Ried Gaisberg combines paragneiss, mica schist, and amphibolite in its upper section with humus-rich loess lower down. Ried Renner has calcareous, loamy-sandy silt formed from loess and crystalline-rock alluvial deposits. Ried Wechselberg is characterized by weathered crystalline rock, a light loess layer, and calcareous soils.

Vineyards

Allram cultivates approximately 30 hectares around Straß. Its principal vineyard sites include the classified 1ÖTW Erste Lagen Ried Heiligenstein, Ried Gaisberg, and Ried Renner, together with Ried Wechselberg, Ried Hasel, and Ried Rosengartl. The estate works primarily with Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, alongside Chardonnay, Weißburgunder, Grauburgunder, Gelber Muskateller, and red varieties including Blauer Zweigelt and St. Laurent. The family has also revived previously neglected vineyard sites, including Lammberg and Rosengartl, restoring old terraces and vines.

Cultivation

Allram places increasing emphasis on farming with respect for the vineyard and is converting the estate step by step towards biodynamic farming under Lorenz and his sister Magdalena. The estate's approach is strongly site-focused, with attention to preserving old vineyards and expressing differences between individual Rieden.

Winery

The winery combines the historic cellar and traditional press house with a modern three-level cellar facility. Allram's winemaking philosophy is based on expressing vineyard origin, vintage, and variety rather than relying solely on conventional sugar- or variety-based classifications. Depending on the wine and site, the estate uses natural yeast, skin contact, extended lees aging, and large oak casks. For example, the Ried Renner Grüner Veltliner receives several hours of skin maceration and eight months of lees aging in large oak casks, while the Ried Gaisberg wines undergo skin maceration, natural-yeast fermentation, and extended aging in large oak.

Family

The family history as a winery goes back to Walter Allram, who transformed the family's mixed farm into a dedicated wine estate in the post-war period. Michaela Haas-Allram and her husband Erich continued the business, expanded the vineyards and cellar, and developed a strong export focus. Since 2015, the next generation, Lorenz Haas-Allram, has been responsible for vinification.

Winemaker

Lorenz Haas-Allram has been responsible for vinification at the estate since 2015. He studied viticulture in Austria and Spain and completed practical experience in Pfalz, Styria, New Zealand, South Africa, and Wachau. His work combines traditional methods with international winemaking experience. Alongside cellar work, Lorenz has focused on restoring forgotten steep vineyards in the Straßertal and on progressively adapting the estate's farming towards biodynamics.

Focus Point

• Family-owned estate in Straß, at the heart of Kamptal. • Strong focus on Grüner Veltliner and Riesling. • Gradual conversion towards biodynamic farming. • Natural-yeast fermentation and extended lees aging in selected wines. • Balance between family tradition and international winemaking experience.
