Colpetrone

Overview
Estate
Colpetrone is located in the heart of Montefalco, Umbria, one of Italy’s most prestigious regions for Sagrantino production. The estate was founded to enhance the identity of this historic territory through wines that combine structure, elegance, and a strong sense of place. Today, Colpetrone is among the leading wineries dedicated to the Montefalco appellations.
Climate
The area benefits from a continental climate with warm summers, cold winters, and pronounced day-to-night temperature variations. The surrounding hills provide excellent ventilation and ideal sun exposure, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly and evenly while preserving freshness and aromatic complexity.
Soil
The soils are primarily clayey and calcareous, with good mineral content and excellent drainage. These characteristics help produce structured wines with depth, concentration, and longevity, particularly suited to Sagrantino.
Vineyards
The vineyards are located on the rolling hills surrounding Montefalco, at elevations of 820 to 1,312 feet above sea level. The estate focuses primarily on native varieties such as Sagrantino and Sangiovese, alongside other traditional Umbrian grapes, all cultivated with careful vineyard management and controlled yields.
Cultivation
Viticulture is practiced with great attention to sustainability and vineyard balance. Harvesting is primarily manual, allowing careful grape selection. Low yields and precise canopy management help preserve concentration, varietal purity, and the authentic expression of the Montefalco terroir.
Winery
The winery blends modern technology with traditional winemaking practices. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks, while aging occurs in French oak barrels and large casks to enhance complexity and soften tannins without overpowering the wines' varietal character.
Family
Colpetrone is part of the historic Tenute del Cerro group, which is deeply committed to preserving and promoting some of Italy’s most important wine regions. The winery embodies a philosophy centered on territorial identity, quality, and respect for Umbrian winemaking traditions.
Winemaker
The winemaking philosophy emphasizes elegance, structure, and balance, with particular attention to expressing Sagrantino's powerful yet refined character. Careful vineyard work and precise aging techniques contribute to wines with depth, freshness, and aging potential.
