Gönc

Overview
Estate
Gönc Winery is a family estate near Ptuj in northeastern Slovenia, in the Štajerska region of the Podravje wine area. The family’s winemaking story dates back to 1936, when Peter Gönc’s great-grandfather planted vines and built the family's first cellar. The estate today combines this family heritage with Peter Gönc’s contemporary approach to winemaking. The winery’s identity is closely linked to music: many labels reference rock music and records played in the cellar during winemaking. The name Gönc refers to a traditional 136-liter Hungarian barrel, which is also represented by the 136 dots used in the winery’s visual identity.
Climate
Gönc vineyards are located in Štajerska, where the climate is cool continental, with warm days and cooler nights. The rolling vineyard landscape and varied exposures contribute to freshness, aromatic definition, and acidity.
Vineyards
The family estate is at approximately 28 acres. The vineyards are located on the hills around Ptuj. The portfolio includes both traditional eastern Slovenian white varieties and international varieties such as Gamay, Pinot Noir, and Merlot. The estate’s wines demonstrate a deliberate interest in variety and site expression rather than a single, narrow house style.
Cultivation
The vineyards are farmed organically. Peter Gönc’s approach emphasizes careful vineyard work, healthy fruit, and minimal intervention. Early, gentle handling and a philosophy that allows vintage and vineyard character to emerge naturally.
Winery
Peter Gönc works with spontaneous fermentations where possible, minimal cellar additions, and low or no added sulfur at bottling. The winery works with a wide range of styles, including fresh whites, skin-contact and orange wines, light and chillable reds, and barrel-aged Chardonnay. The winery’s identity is closely linked to music: many labels reference rock music and records played in the cellar during winemaking. The name Gönc refers to a traditional 136-liter Hungarian barrel, which is also represented by the 136 dots used in the winery’s visual identity.
Family
The Gönc family has four generations of winemaking history. The story begins in 1936 with Peter’s great-grandfather. Peter’s grandfather later moved to Ptuj and worked at Ptujska Klet, progressing from cellar work to head winemaker and eventually CEO. Peter’s father also worked at Ptujska Klet while developing his own vineyards. The family subsequently established the modern Gönc winery in Ptuj.
Winemaker
Peter Gönc leads the current generation. He grew up in the family cellar, explored other regions and winemakers, and returned to Štajerska to develop his own style.
