Gottardi

Overview
Estate
The winery covers about 8 hectares in the village of Mazzon, Alto Adige/South Tyrol. This little spot has always been known as “Pinot Noir Heaven” and one of the best places in Italy for growing this challenging variety. The first to discover the region's potential was Bruno Gottardi.
Climate
The climate in Mazzon is very special because the warm winds from Lake Garda during the day warm the vineyards, while the cool winds from the Fiemme Valley during the afternoon and evening cool them down. This creates large temperature differences between day and night, which are essential for flavor development.
Soil
The soil is characterized by a thin layer of humus, followed by a rocky subsoil, so the vines need to dig deep to get enough nutrients.
Vineyards
The 8 hectares of vineyards are spread over 8 parcels, all located in Mazzon. The altitude is between 1,148 and 1,476 feet above sea level. The average age of the vines is 25-35 years. Since 2009, the estate has been producing 100% Pinot Noir.
Cultivation
Pruning and harvesting are done by hand. The team selects the grapes in the vineyard. Only the best grapes reach the cellar door. The vinification is gravity-based in the first year. The wines age for 12 months in barriques, 8 months in big barrels, and at least 2 years in bottle (3 years minimum for Riserva).
Winery
The estate was bought in 1986 by Bruno Gottardi. The cellar was built between 1990 and 1995, and 1996 was the first vintage produced in the new cellar. After Bruno passed away in 2010, his son Alexander took over the winery. Since 2022, Elisabeth, Alexander's daughter, has been in charge of the estate.
Family
The Gottardi family originally comes from Tyrol, Austria. In 1986, the estate was bought by Bruno Gottardi. Over the years, the vineyards grew from 2 to 8 hectares, and the wine cellar was built. Today, the estate is run by Elisabeth, the third generation. The passion for wine and winemaking has been passed down from generation to generation.
Winemaker
The wines have always been vinified by the family. The oenologist and consultant is Enrico Paternoster, who has been working with the family for over 30 years.
