Recuero & Co

Overview
Estate
Recuero & Co is a family wine project based in Villanueva de Alcardete, Toledo, with a second viticultural project in the Sierra de Gata in northern Cáceres, Extremadura. The family winery in Villanueva de Alcardete dates to 1873. The project focuses on historical vineyards, local grape varieties, and wines made with limited intervention.
Climate
The estate works in two distinct areas. In the Antiguos Territorios de Guzquía, in Toledo-Cuenca, the vineyards lie at an average altitude of about 2,755 feet. In Sierra de Gata, the Antier vineyards are in and around Villamiel, described as the highest population center of the Sierra, at approximately 2,624-2,952 feet. The Sierra de Gata project is characterized by mountain viticulture and an Atlantic-influenced mountain environment.
Soil
The Guzquía vineyards grow on sandy, clay, calcareous, and mixed soils. Some of these vineyards are planted on their own roots. In Sierra de Gata, the historic vineyards have blue granite soils, with small parcels enclosed by stone walls and often arranged on slopes and terraces.

Cultivation
Viticulture in the Guzquía vineyards is ecological, rational, and respectful of the environment, with minimal intervention in the vineyard and, subsequently, in the winery. In Sierra de Gata, the winery practices mountain viticulture, using cover crops and working with old, small vineyard parcels. Jesús Recuero describes his approach as an 'agricultura coherente', based on respecting the vineyard and intervening as little as possible.
Winery
The family's historic winery is in Villanueva de Alcardete, Toledo, where the Recuero family has been making wine since 1873. The Sierra de Gata project is associated with Villamiel and the Antier wines. The winery's current families include Calambur and Sigilo from the Toledo-Cuenca area, and Antier and Melangé from Sierra de Gata.
Winemaker
Jesús María Recuero is the winemaker and owner of the project. His stated philosophy is to work with old vineyards and local varieties, some of which are nearly disappeared, while seeking authentic wines that reflect their place and traditional character. In the Sierra de Gata project, he applies the same low-intervention approach to historic mountain vineyards.
