Overview
Estate
The company’s 70 hectares of vineyards are situated in the municipality of Mariano del Friuli, within the Friuli Isonzo designation of origin area. The region is on the easternmost edge of northern Italy, near the border with Slovenia. To the South, it’s less than 12 miles to the Adriatic Sea, while the first slopes of the Alps start about 19 miles to the North.
Climate
The area is a convergence of maritime and continental air masses—dry, humid, cold, and temperate—causing climate changes. Cold eastern Bora and warm Mediterranean scirocco winds alternate. During the vine’s cycle, there are rainy springs, dry summers, and cool rainy autumns, resembling a European or northern Mediterranean climate.
Soil
Medium limestone originated from karst rock and dolomite deposits during the post-glacial period. Soil conditions vary among vineyards due to differences in stratigraphy and structure. Some soils are deeper with moderate skeleton and clay; others are shallower with more skeleton and less clay.
Vineyards
The vineyards, established in 1982 for modernization, maximize photosynthesis and berry reserves. They feature dense planting (6,000-8,000 plants/ha), low yields (~1 kg per plant), and an exposed leaf area of 18,000 m²/ha. Using Guyot and spurred cordon systems, with grassed soil and manual work, these vineyards optimize quality.
Cultivation
S.Q.N.P.I certified since 2021, focused on minimizing impact on production by adhering to regional regulations in integrated pest management.
Winery
The winery has been modernized over the years to ensure optimal wine production. Innovative ideas and research have driven our family to make key investments, including the 1989 three-floor expansion, the 2023 expansion of the barrel cellar and aging areas, and new spaces designed for customers and guests.
Family
The Gallo family started its journey in the wine industry over a century ago, in the early 1900s. Following the footsteps of Basilio, Stelio, and other family members, today the company includes the third and fourth generations and is managed by Gianfranco, Franca, and their children: Tommaso, Matteo, and Veronica.
Winemaker
Gianfranco Gallo has been the winery’s oenologist since 1978. After gaining experience in some of the world’s top wine-producing regions, his son Tommaso joined him at the winery several years ago.
Focus Point
• Wines that showcase the character of the territory.
• Enhancing each vineyard’s unique identity through traditional winemaking.
• Market the white wines two years after harvest to allow proper bottle aging.
