Veneto At a Glance
Region NameVeneto
Veneto is an important wine region in the northeastern corner of Italy. In terms of geography, culture, and wine styles, it represents a transition between the alpine, Germano-Slavic end of Italy and the warmer, drier, more Roman lands to the south.
Score: 92Vintage 2020Vinous MediaThe 2020 Valpolicella Classico Superiore Sant'Urbano is wonderfully perfumed, with a seductive bouquet of crushed violet candies, graphite, sweet smoke and wild blueberries. Seamlessly silky and polished, it sweeps across the palate with lifted textures and floral-laced wild berry fruits. The 2020 finishes with admirable length and potency, leaving crunchy tannins and a tactile mineral crunch.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 90Vintage 2020Wine SpectatorThis medium-bodied red is fluid and well-knit, integrating light, taut tannins with a creamy range of dried cherry, green olive and fig notes, with a subtle, smoke-tinged undertow. Delicate floral, spice and herb details linger on the finish. Drink now through 2029.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 89Vintage 2020James SucklingThe appassimento dry extract is evident. Think pickled cherries, dried tobacco, Chinotto, anise and smoked meat. A single vineyard expression. Impressive density and vitality, if not a bit dried out by a subtle, yet rustic whiff, of brettanomyces. I think it adds to the wine without detracting excessively. Drink now.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 93Vintage 2019Vinous MediaThe 2019 Valpolicella Superiore Classico Sant'Urbano is perfumed in the glass, as savory herbs, crushed rocks and graphite give way to peppery blackberries and currants. This coasts along the palate, cool-toned and finessed with a core of crisp red fruits and minerals cascading across the palate. Violet and lavender tones resonate throughout as sweet tannins add a pleasant farmwork to the finish. This is top-shelf Valpolicella.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 92Vintage 2019James SucklingLovely red cherries, strawberries, licorice and a splash of white pepper on the nose, extending to the medium-bodied palate, coated by some polished tannins before a juicy, berry-flavored finish. Well made. From organically grown grapes. Drink now.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 91Vintage 2019Wine AdvocateA certified-organic wine, the Speri 2019 Valpolicella Classico Superiore Sant'Urbano offers medium weight and a drinkable style with hints of grilled herb, wild berry and blackcurrant. This style of easy-drinking wine offers a good alternative to the overblown red wines of the Valpolicella made with air-dried fruit that are harder to drink in hot weather and with the lighter foods we enjoy eating today. This is an approachable release of 82,000 bottles.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 90Vintage 2019Wine EnthusiastWild strawberries and sweet and savory spices along with turned earth waft from the glass of this pretty Valpolicella. It's savory on the palate with herbal notes and dried violets taking center stage and fresh and dried sour cherries playing supporting roles. The wine finishes with fine and easy tannins. Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 92Vintage 2010Vinous MediaA captivating blend of sour cherries, autumnal spice, dried orange peel and hints of undergrowth wafts up from the 2010 Valpolicella Classico Superiore Sant'Urbano. Silky and enveloping, this floods the palate with masses of ripe wild berry fruits motivated by juicy acidity. It finishes with amazing freshness, still wildly energetic, with a framework of crunchy tannins—a testament to the agreeability of Valpolicella.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 92Vintage 2008James SucklingAn aged Amarone of prodigious complexity, strongly reflective of a rich, dry vintage. Little botrytic concerns, but conversely, a year low in acidity. Camphor, Fernet Branca, mint, licorice root, cardamon, pine and a swashbuckle of prune and darker, torrefacted fruits. Loads of power. Not a wine for those seeking finesse. Drinkable now, but best from 2025.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 90Vintage 2005Vinous MediaThe 2005 Valpolicella Classico Superiore Sant'Urbano is seductive in its maturity, with a dark and alluring bouquet of plum sauce, blood orange and hints of tobacco. This is lifted and finessed, with a core of tart cherry and saline minerals guided by brisk acidity. It tapers off with medium length and a slight bitter tinge of savory spice, leaving hints of sous bois to resonate. The 2005 is thoroughly mature yet still a pleasure to taste. Of note, it received 45 days of appassimento, in contrast to today's wines that see only 20.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
