Friuli Venezia Giulia At a Glance
Region NameFriuli Venezia Giulia
In Friuli Venezia Giulia, most of the best vineyards are located in the southeastern part of the region facing Alpine foothills’ slopes. Here the vines benefit from direct sunlight and a complex climatic intersection of the warm Mediterranean influence of the Adriatic Sea coupled with the cooling breezes from the Julian Alps.
Score: 94Vintage 2022James SucklingStony minerality with aromas of tuberose, white peaches and lemon leaves. Medium-bodied, it shows weight, a silky texture, sharp acidity and a poised, balanced finish. Drink or hold.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 92Vintage 2022Wine SpectatorThis well-meshed white is compact up front, opening on the palate to reveal layers of melon, grapefruit peel, lentil and chive blossom notes framed by vibrant acidity. A smoke-tinged, mineral-driven underpinning echoes on the finish. Drink now through 2032. 3000 cases made, 200 cases importedShelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 94Vintage 2021The Wine Advocate This is a beautifully expressive wine that benefits from lees aging in oak barrel. The Vie di Romans 2021 Friuli Isonzo Sauvignon Blanc Vieris (with 35,200 bottles released) has floral tones, plumeria, a touch of white pepper and ashy mineral notes. The Vieris shows less of the jalapeño that I got in the zesty Piere rendition of this same grape. This wine also offers some elegant petroleum-like hints that add to the overall complexity.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 94Vintage 2021Vinous MediaThe 2021 Sauvignon Blanc Vieris opens slowly in the glass, holding back in its youthful state, with hints of lemon oil, rosemary and wet stone accentuated by sweet spice. This is seamlessly silky, almost oily in feel, with sapid yellow citrus and savory herbal tones enriched by vibrant acidity. It finishes potent and spicy, leaving the palate saturated in an intense staining of primary concentration. The potential here is off the charts, but today, the Vieris is one of the most backward wines out of the 2021 portfolio.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 93Vintage 2021James SucklingRich and dense sauvignon with notes of waxed lemons, ripe stone fruit, raw almonds with spicy and herbaceous nuances to it. It’s full-bodied with depth and creaminess on the palate, yet there is vivid acidity cutting through and giving it a fresh and citrusy vibe. Long finish. Drink now or hold.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 92Vintage 2021Wine SpectatorA graceful, medium-bodied white that caresses the palate with a creamy texture. Features flavors of ripe mango and melon, blood orange peel and crushed pine supported by mouthwatering acidity and an underlying streak of salinity, both driving the well-honeyed finish. Drink now through 2031. 600 cases made, 200 cases imported.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 94Vintage 2020Vinous MediaThe 2020 Sauvignon Blanc Vieris wafts up with a spritz of lemon zests and savory herbs complemented by wet slate. It’s silken and pliant with underlying energy, as today, the density of the fruit is more prominent; yet below it all, a saturation of saline-minerals collects. This tapers off long with sapid concentration, yet also the residual acids to balance. The 2020 is a Vieris to bury deep in the cellar. I’m having recollections of the 2012 while tasting this. Score: 93Vintage 2020James Suckling MagazineThis is very lemony with a lemon rind and green leaf character through the wine. Full-bodied with tangy acidity and a flavorful finish. Lightly bitter at the end. Dense and dry sauvignon. Drink now.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 91Vintage 2020Wine EnthusiastUpfront grapefruit, tropical fruit, white flower and wild herb aromas captivate from the get-go. Aged in French barrique, this wine is round and rich on the palate with hints of melon and peach. A bright pop of acidity on the finish keep the wine from being too richShelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 90Vintage 2020Wine SpectatorAn elegant white, creamy and lightly mouthwatering throughout, with finely knit notes of ripe Anjou pear, lime blossoms, minerally flint and saline, tarragon and Meyer lemon peel. Score: 95Vintage 2019James SucklingA gorgeous, opulent sauvignon blanc with lots of ripe fruit that comes across as pineapple and mango. It’s full and rather oily with lots of fruit and a long, long finish. Spicy and minerally at the end. One of the best sauvignon blancs from Italy. Drink or hold.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 94Vintage 2019Vinous MediaThe 2019 Sauvignon Blanc Vieris lifts up with a spicy and pungent display of lemon oil, white smoke and wild herbs mixed with ginger and a spritz of tangerine. This keeps the energy remarkably high throughout. Soft textures across the palate are motivated by lime-infused acids, concentrated notes of grapefruit and young kiwi that drench the senses in sour, tropical citrus tension. The finish goes on and on, as the 2019’s massive primary intensity slowly melts away, leaving a lip-smacking, fresh impression. While you can easily enjoy this now for its vivid fruit and mouthwatering personality. It needs time, and the best is truly yet to come.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 95Vintage 2018James SucklingAn aromatic, medium-to full-bodied white with aromas of lemon, grapefruit zest and hazelnut. Complex beeswax and hay notes, alongside stones and nettles. Good acidity and texture and wonderful depth on the finish. Drink or hold.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 93Vintage 2018Wine AdvocateAs opposed to the Piere that is aged in steel, this wine sees 10 months of lees aging in French oak. The Vie di Romans 2018 Friuli Isonzo Sauvignon Blanc Vieris reveals ripe peach aromas and more flavors from the orchard with apple, pear and tropical notes at the back. As the wine expands to fill the confines of the glass, it peels back with orange peel and candied fruit. Dig a little deeper and you get warm notes of pastry crust and cream custard, with some of the salty mineral you should always expect from these unique Friuli sedimentary soils.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 93Vintage 2018Vinous MediaThe 2018 Sauvignon Blanc Vieris is decidedly spicy in this vintage. Yellow flowers are elevated and intensified by notes of lemon-infused young mango and pungent minerals. It’s texturally rich and smooth while also sporting a blend of zippy acidity and sour citrus that forces the cheeks to pucker and thirst for more. Inner florals resonate over salty tension with a twang of grapefruit rind and savory spice. Wow, this is a hold-onto-your-seat expression of Sauvignon that’s sure to have a lot of fans.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review

Score: 94Vintage 2017Wine AdvocateThis was a vintage that saw reduced yields across the board with quite a few climatic challenges thrown at winemakers in Friuli. The team at Vie di Romans was evidently undeterred by the bad weather, instead producing a wine with some hot-vintage aromas of ripe apricot and honey that are well balanced against the fleshy richness of the mouthfeel. The 2017 Friuli Isonzo Sauvignon Blanc Vieris (which is aged on the lees in oak) shows softness and silkiness, all capped by abundant stone fruit, melon and pear. The results are impressive, and 33,753 bottles were released.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 89Vintage 2017Vinous MediaBright pale golden-tinged straw color. Penetrating herb- and oak spice-accented aromas of grapefruit and green lime, with undertones of ripe stone fruit in the background. Shows a vaguely green fruit and herbal character to its fresh citrus and tropical fruit flavors, but in a riper, less pungent style than this winery’s 2017 Piere. Closes long and gently flinty, with very good focus and clarity. Though there is no lack of personality here, I think the hot vintage led to this wine having a slightly compressed aromatic expression.

Score: 93Vintage 2016Wine AdvocateI drank this beautiful wine with a dinner of couscous with chicken, fresh mint and preserved lemon. The 2016 Friuli Isonzo Rive Alte Sauvignon Blanc Vieris is not a pungent Sauvignon but rather a beautifully tempered and elegant one. It has the kind of creamy and long persistence that, to me, is an indication of a compellingly food-friendly white wine. There are lovely notes of candied orange peel with almond and fragrant garden herb. The wine ages on the lees in barrique for nine months. Production is 32,864-bottles strong.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 91Vintage 2015Wine AdvocateThere is a bit more heat in this vintage, but the 2015 Friuli Isonzo Rive Alte Sauvignon Blanc Vieris (with 29,853 bottles made) is a nice wine, with slightly more candied fruit and a thicker style compared to the 2016. It appears also to be a bit more saturated in its golden appearance. This is a warm and soothing Sauvignon that you might pair with pasta in a cream and lemon sauce.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
