Villa Raiano

Overview

Estate

Villa Raiano is located on top of a hill in the territory of the municipality of San Michele di Serino (AV) at 1,968 feet above sea level. A modern structure, surrounded by 8 hectares of vineyards, chestnut and hazelnut woods. From the panoramic terrace of the winery, with your gaze, you can follow the entire valley of the Sabato River.

Climate

The climate can be defined as continental, not Mediterranean like many other wine-growing territories in Southern Italy. Summers are hot but not scorching. Temperatures are high only in July but already in August the first rains begin and are concentrated in autumn and spring. Winter is cold with snowfall.

Soil

Medium clayey-sandy with the presence, in some precise territories, of volcanic ash due to eruptions of the Vesuvius volcano, which is about 19 miles away.

Vineyards

Villa Raiano cultivates 30 hectares of vineyards, all owned, managed organically, and certified since 2011. Small plots, distributed in the areas with designation of origin in the province of Avellino, at different altitudes (from 1,148 to 1,804 ft a.s.l.) and with different soil compositions. Each vineyard, therefore, has its own characteristics, always different in combination with the variety grown.

Cultivation

Villa Raiano cultivates its 30 hectares of vineyards following organic methods, certified since 2011. Almost all of them are conducted with guyot except for one hectare of Aglianico conducted with Pergola Avellinese: an ancient method of vine cultivation with a plant more than two meters high from the ground with a very low planting density

Winery

The current winery was built in 2009. From 1996, the year the company was founded, to 2009 the processes were carried out within the old factories of the Basso family. The structure of the winery is constantly evolving through a remodeling of the spaces. The last intervention will be in 2024 with the creation of the underground area for the aging of wines and sparkling wines.

Family

Familia Basso owns the company. Irpinian family in the roots. The company was born from the vision and work of the two brothers Sabino and Simone and is currently managed by their respective sons Federico and Brunella.

Winemaker

The winemaker and agronomist is Fortunato Sebastiano. Fifty years old, Irpinian by birth, precisely from Ariano Irpino. Graduated in Oenology at the University of Pisa, he collaborates with Villa Raiano as an external consultant.

Focus Point

• Family-run. • Estate winery. • Exclusive use of Irpinia vines in search of their perfect combination with their extraordinarily varied territory.
