Umbria At a Glance

Region Name Umbria

Bordering on Tuscany and right above Rome is the lesser-known and lesser-traveled region of Umbria.  Without access to either the sea or international borders, it is affectionately referred to as the “green heart of Italy.”

  • Score: 90 Vintage 2020 Wine Enthusiast Aromas of macerated cherries, orange zest, clove and wildflowers flow from the glass. Bright and fresh on the palate with crunchy red fruits both fresh and dried, and savory herbs with fine tannins make this a perfect weekday pasta night wine. Shelf Talker Full Page Review
  • Score: 88 Vintage 2020 Vinous Media The 2020 Montefalco Rosso opens with an herbal-tinged blend of blackberries and white pepper. It's soft and round with wild berry fruit, yet I find myself craving more energy. The medium-length finish leaves hints of black licorice. I tasted from two separate bottles with consistent results. • Score: 91 Vintage 2018 James Suckling Aromas of black olives, wild herbs and plums. Medium-bodied with silky tannins. Driving acidity with some rather tasty and interesting herbal and spice character. Turmeric and tarragon. Juicy red fruit at its core. Drink now. Shelf Talker Full Page Review
  • Score: 89 Vintage 2018 Vinous Media Cracked chalk, wild herbs and tart black cherries define the bouquet of the 2018 Rosso. It’s soft-textured and lifted in feel, with a burst of inner sweetness that gives way to notes of wild strawberry and mint. This tapers off with medium length and juicy, leaving nuances of blackberry and violet pastille. Shelf Talker Full Page Review
  • Score: 91 Vintage 2016 James Suckling I like the bright pomegranate, cranberry and fresh-herb character on the nose and palate. Medium-bodied with well-integrated tannins and a clean, flavorful finish. Surprising freshness considering its age. All in place and nice to drink now. Shelf Talker Full Page Review
  • Score: 92 Vintage 2015 Vinous Media The 2015 Colpetrone Rosso di Montefalco is much more refined and perfumed than I would have expected from this warm vintage, showing peppery herbs and dusty florals, plus crushed red wild berries and a hint of dusty earth. On the palate, silky textures envelop all that they touch in ripe cherry fruit and sweet spices, made juicy through vibrant acidity and minerals, as round tannins slowly settle in. The finish is medium in length, leaning more toward the tart black fruit spectrum, yet with a salty twang that makes the mouth water. The 2017 is really quite stunning today. A blend of 70% Sangiovese with equal parts Merlot and Sagrantino. Shelf Talker Full Page Review
  • Score: 92 Vintage 2015 James Suckling The candied strawberries and caramelized orange peel draw you in on the nose; then you notice hints of ash and red licorice. The full-bodied palate has quite a serious tannin backbone, and vibrant red fruit lies beneath waiting to be drawn out tightly by a fine acid edge. The finish is quite fruit-forward. Drink now. • Score: 90 Vintage 2014 Vinous Media The 2014 Colpetrone Rosso di Montefalco is wonderfully fresh yet also quite spicy, leading off with dusty flowers and hints of peppery herbs, as notes of bright cherry, hints of leather and cedar develop in the glass. On the palate, soft textures flood the senses with creamy, ripe berries, subtle spice and inner florals. The finish is medium in length and fresh, leaning toward the savory spectrum, resonating on pretty red fruits and a hint of fine tannin. Shelf Talker Full Page Review
  • Score: 87 Vintage 2014 Wine Enthusiast Ripe red berry, culinary spice and leather aromas lead the nose while a whiff of espresso stays in the background. The light-bodied, supple palate evokes ripe black cherry, star anise and coffee bean alongside pliant tannins. Drink soon. KERIN O’KEEFE Shelf Talker Full Page Review
