Fossacolle

Overview
Estate
In the early 1980s, the Marchetti family received a gift from the landowner of the property where they lived, known as “Podere Fossacolle.”
Thus, in 1984, the wine business began with the establishment of the first Sangiovese vineyards.
On January 1, 2002, the first production of Brunello di Montalcino, from the 1997 vintage, was released.
Climate
There are cold, windy winters with the possibility of snow. Fairly rainy springs and hot summers interspersed with rain, and the influence of the sea mitigates temperatures somewhat. Annual minimum temperatures can reach -42°F, while maximum temperatures can reach 95°F.
Soil
In the original vineyard in Tavernelle, the soil is mainly clayey with silt and tuff.
In the new vineyard planted in 2019, however, the soil is composed of galestro, tuff with a good presence of mineral and calcareous rocks.
Vineyards
An area of just under 4 hectares. Southwestern exposure, with altitudes ranging from 984 to 1,312 feet asl. Fossacolle grows Sangiovese Grosso in the Montalcino area and has a vineyard just outside the town where they grow international varieties: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot.
Cultivation
The vineyards are cultivated strictly by hand using spurred cordon and guyot training systems.
Winery
The cellars are situated in the small medieval village of Tavernelle, located on the southern slope of the Montalcino hill. Alcoholic fermentation occurs in temperature-controlled steel tanks, and malolactic fermentation takes place in cement tanks. These are followed by extended aging in French and Slavonian oak barrels and barriques. The final stage of aging before bottling takes place in cement tanks.
Family
Sergio Marchetti, owner of the Fossacolle farm, belongs to an ancient family whose origins date back to the 18th century. The descendants of this family lived and worked as farmers on the lands of a large and a noble family under a sharecropping system. The winery is now run by Stefano, Sergio’s grandson, with the whole family’s help.
Winemaker
Adriano Bambagioni, Sergio’s son-in-law, has over 40 years of experience in wine production in Montalcino, having worked as Cellar Master for a leading local winery, collaborating with highly experienced oenologists. A few years ago, Adriano and Stefano brought in Gabriele Gadenz as an external consultant, a professional with extensive experience and technical knowledge.
Focus Point
• 100% family-owned business, run and operated solely by the Marchetti/Bambagioni family.
• Unwavering focus on the quality and durability of the wines.
• Craftsmanship and authenticity.
