Overview
Estate
TAPI’s estate covers 4oha in the mid to lower Wairau Valley of Marlborough. Situated at the top of the Southern Island of New Zealand, near the town of Blenheim.
Climate
Marlborough is protected from the North, West, and South by huge mountain ranges, which makes it a rain shadow area. Summers have warm days and cool nights with high diurnal variation. Winters are cool and frosty but reasonably sunny. Over the course of the year, the temperature typically ranges from -39 to 93 °F.
Soil
The soil is characterized by an alluvial plain of the Wairau River that forms and deposits rounded stones of all sizes called ‘Greywacke’. Over millions of years, various floods and earthquakes have shaped the land in Marlborough, lifting various terraces and depositing deep silts, sands, and stones, with some clay on the hills and directly next to the hills.
Vineyards
The vineyards are about 30 hectares, situated at an altitude of 279 to 639 feet asl, and have a North-South exposure on the sunny river plains. The focus is mainly on Sauvignon Blanc, but other varieties such as Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, and Pinot Noir are also available.
Cultivation
The harvest for Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris is done with state-of-the-art machine harvesters, but for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, the harvest and pruning are strictly handmade.
Winery
The cellar is modern and built for function and wine quality. Grapes are received into the winery differently depending on the harvest method. After reception, the grapes are crushed and pressed, and the wine is made in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks. Some wines stay in these tanks for fermentation; others in the batch go to French oak barriques, which are stored in a huge temperature-controlled hall.
Family
Gus Altschwager and Swan Michel-Altschwager are partners in life and partners in wine. Swan was born on Reunion Island, and Gus was born in South Australia. Both moved to Malborough in 1998 and 2005, respectively. Swan’s father, Georges Michel, started the wine estate in 1998, and Swan has been its winemaker since 2004. Gus and Swan started making wine together in 2010, moonlighting while having other ‘daytime’ winemaking roles.
Winemaker
Gus Altschwager and Swan Michel-Altschwager have been winemakers in Marlborough since the early 2000s. They have overseen top estates such as Oyster Bay, Georges Michel, and Rapaura Springs and earned numerous awards. In 2014, they partnered with South Australian Mark Kenneally to create TAPI wines, leveraging his extensive viticulture experience.
