Friuli Venezia Giulia At a Glance
Region NameFriuli Venezia Giulia
In Friuli Venezia Giulia, most of the best vineyards are located in the southeastern part of the region facing Alpine foothills’ slopes. Here the vines benefit from direct sunlight and a complex climatic intersection of the warm Mediterranean influence of the Adriatic Sea coupled with the cooling breezes from the Julian Alps.
Score: 93Vintage 2021James SucklingThis has more of a peachy color with ripe stone fruit, sliced apples, savory herbs, spices, praline and crushed stones. Medium- to full-bodied, chalky and slightly phenolic with some salty character to it. Creamy finish. Drink now.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 92Vintage 2021Wine SpectatorA ramato-style Pinot Grigio, this is a light, tawny pink hue, with a subtle chalkiness to the texture as it carries a rich range of baked apricot, dried white cherry and salted Marcona almond flavors, revealing accents of vanilla, singed orange peel and dried lemon thyme. Boasts bright acidity that buoys the expressive flavor profile through to the lingering, creamy finish. Drink now through 2030. 1,500 cases made, 500 cases imported.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 90Vintage 2021Vinous MediaThe 2021 Pinot Grigio Dessimis lifts from the glass with exotic florals, sweet spices and peach. This opens with a burst of inner sweetness, complicated by zesty acidity and mineral tones, as a vivid note of ripe pear evolves on the palate. This finishes classically dry and slightly grippy, leaving nuances of white strawberry and rosy inner florals to linger. The 2021 is a more mellow edition of Dessimis, yet enjoyable all the same.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 94Vintage 2020James SucklingRose-gold color. Lots of sliced peaches and strawberries with hints of cotton candy. Medium to full body, a creamy texture and a fresh finish. Rose blossom and oranges at the end. Special wine. Drink now.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 93Vintage 2020Wine EnthusiastThis copper-colored Pinot Grigio (better known as Ramato in Friuli) is a pure delight. Aromas of strawberry and cherry mix with peach and crisp apples as if the best fruit salad were in your glass. Subtle hints of mint, fresh flowers and sweet spice dance between the fruit aromas. The palate is forward but is pulled together with a nervy strain of acidity from beginning to end. This is a wine that crosses so many culinary boundaries that it warrants experimenting and having some fun.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 91Vintage 2020Wine SpectatorThis Pinot Gris is a pale tawny-pink hue and light- to medium-bodied. Lightly chalky in texture and juicy on the palate, with a refreshing tang of salinity layered with baked white peach, blanched almond and delicate hints of ground ginger, lemon thyme and smoke. Drink now through 2027. 1,500 cases made, 50 cases imported.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 89Vintage 2020Vinous MediaThe color of the 2020 Pinot Grigio Dessimis is nearly translucent copper, wafting up with alluring notes of almond paste, white flowers and Asian pear. It’s soft and pliant, matching its ripe orchard fruit with zesty acids and minerals, yet I find it lacking a bit of the depth of better vintages. It finishes long, staining and lightly structured, yet leaves the palate refreshed.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 92Vintage 2019Wine SpectatorThis is lightly copper-colored in hue, offering appealing aromas and flavors of ripe apricot and yellow peach, passionfruit coulis, chopped hazelnut, verbena and spun honey. Lightly chalky in texture, with well-cut acidity providing definition for the lush range of flavors. Mouthwatering and well-spiced finish. Drink now through 2026. 1,500 cases made, 500 cases imported.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 92Vintage 2019James SucklingSlightly rosé color here. It’s deep and intense, showing dried apples and spices with some pomegranate and rust undertones. Red apples, too. Full-bodied, dense and flavorful. Rather chewy at the end. Drink now.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 96Vintage 2018James SucklingBeautiful rose-gold color with lots of ripe pear, golden apple, mango and pineapple on the nose. Hint of honey. It’s full-bodied and creamy on the palate with toasted almonds alongside tropical fruit. Smoky minerality, too. Drink or hold.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 94Vintage 2018Wine AdvocateThe Vie di Romans 2018 Friuli Isonzo Pinot Grigio Dessimis boasts a pale copper color with amber and peachy pink highlights. This vintage is not as wide or as texturally generous as the 2017 vintage also tasted in this report. However, the 2018 offers lifted, sharp fruit that is delineated and pure. Those subtle mineral nuances also appear with more clarity. There is tart berry, white cherry, wild mint and bitter almond. I also taste a mild tannic crunch. That structure comes from extended maceration on Pinot Grigio skins, as does the wine's pretty color. It would be interesting to check in on its evolution in five year's time. The wine ages on the lees for two months in French barrique.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 92Vintage 2018Vinous MediaThe 2018 Pinot Grigio Dessimis is a pleasure to taste and also to look at with its beautiful orange, almost-amber color. Notes of dried apricot and peach take on a yellow citrus twang, with hints of almond paste adding an alluring richness. It’s textural and soothing on the senses without a hard edge in sight; instead coasting effortlessly across the palate with ripe orchard fruits, young mango and a hint of exotic spice. An inner sweetness lingers with an air of brown butter and hazelnut. The Dessimis is matured all in stainless steel and takes its color from spending ten months on the fine lees.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 90Vintage 2018Wine SpectatorA vibrant, light- to medium-bodied version, this Pinot Grigio is the pale pink of ballet slippers. Lightly chalky in texture, offers an expressive range of flavors, including peach skin, almond biscotti, candied pink grapefruit zest and a hint of lemon thyme. A tang of salinity shows on the mouthwatering finish. Drink now through 2026. 4,000 cases made, 500 cases imported. Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 93Vintage 2017James SucklingA beautifully colored and intense pinot grigio with sliced cooked apples and peaches and hints of watermelon and almonds. Full body. Very creamy texture and a flavorful finish. Drink or hold.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 90Vintage 2017Wine SpectatorPale copper in color, with a pretty, aromatic profile of ginger, cardamom, graphite and leather notes. Score: 90Vintage 2017Wine and SpiritsThis is a rich and flamboyant pinot grigio, its juicy flavors of pale strawberry and peach overshadowed by notes of toasted nuts and spice from nine months in barriques. The warm, weighty finish is refreshed by balancing mandarin-like acidity.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
Score: 93Vintage 2016Wine AdvocateThe 2016 Friuli Isonzo Rive Alte Pinot Grigio Dessimis is classified as a white, but it is really a ramato, or copper in color, reflecting the real color of this grape's skins. Slightly reductive in nature, it brings out notes of cranberry and bright cassis with some white cherry as well. It was fermented in steel and aged on the lees in barrique. This is a very interesting wine that would make a good pairing with sliced porchetta. Exactly 52,286 bottles were released.Shelf TalkerFull Page Review
