Il Chiosso

Overview
Estate
Il Chiosso is a family winery in northern Piedmont, established in 2007 to enhance the historic appellations and native grape varieties of Alto Piemonte. The estate owns about 12 hectares of vineyards and produces approximately 70,000 bottles annually, focusing on elegant wines with a strong sense of place.
Climate
The climate of Alto Piemonte features cool, sunny summers and cold winters typical of foothill regions. These conditions favor slow grape ripening, preserving freshness, aromatic complexity, and longevity in the wines.
Soil
The soils of northern Piedmont are predominantly acidic and geologically diverse. Along the Novara hills, the soils are fluvio-glacial, with clayey surfaces and subsoils rich in granite, basalt, and porphyry. The Gattinara area is characterized by volcanic porphyritic soils rich in iron and manganese.
Vineyards
The vineyards lie between the Novara hills and the Gattinara area, at elevations ranging from 820 to 1,575 feet above sea level. The estate cultivates native grape varieties, including Nebbiolo (Spanna), Vespolina, and Uva Rara.
Cultivation
Viticulture is managed using natural and sustainable methods, including integrated pest control, grassing without herbicides, and mating disruption techniques to control harmful insects. The vineyards are trained primarily using single or double Guyot systems.
Winery
The winery blends tradition with modern technology. The vinification and bottling areas feature temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks and advanced equipment, while the aging cellar houses large French and Slavonian oak barrels ranging from 2,500 to 7,500 liters.
Family
Il Chiosso was founded through the union of two historic winegrowing families of northern Piedmont, the Cambieri and Arlunno. Today, the winery is directly managed by the younger generation, Carlo Cambieri and Marco Arlunno, who continue to promote the identity and prestige of Alto Piemonte wines.
Winemaker
Marco Arlunno graduated in Oenology from the University of Milan in 2007 and previously worked as a viticulturist and winemaker at the Mirù family winery in Ghemme. His philosophy emphasizes elegance, freshness, verticality, and the authentic expression of northern Piedmont terroirs.
