Tua Rita

Overview
Estate
In 1984, Rita Tua and Virgilio Bisti bought land in the Tuscan Maremma near Suvereto. Their dedication transformed Tua Rita into a leader in Italy’s “garage wine” revolution. Over the decades, Tua Rita’s vineyard expanded from 5 to 22, then 50 by the early 2000s, and finally 160 acres.
Climate
Mediterranean with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. Near the Tyrrhenian Sea with moderated temperatures and gentle breezes. Summer averages are 82°F to 90°F, with little rainfall, while winter averages range from 46°F to 57°F, with most precipitation occurring from October to March.
Soil
The soil here is a unique blend of stone, rock, clay, silt, and sand, enriched with a wealth of mineral microelements, located in the heart of the Colline Metallifere, a region in the upper Maremma known for its geological richness. This land leaves a distinct imprint on the wines.
Vineyards
The vineyards cover approximately 160 acres, situated at altitudes ranging from 320 to 490 feet above sea level, with various exposures on the sunny hills. The focus is primarily on international grape varieties, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Petit Verdot, Chardonnay, Riesling, and Traminer, as well as local varieties such as Vermentino, Ansonica, and Sangiovese.
Cultivation
The harvesting and pruning are strictly done by hand. Training systems: spurred cordon and guyot.
Winery
Rooted in Italian artisanal craftsmanship, the winery honors both production needs and excellence.
True to this philosophy, our minimal, non-invasive winemaking allows the unique characteristics of the fruit and terroir to shine in every bottle. This commitment to quality strikes a balance between tradition and innovation, ensuring exceptional wines that are authentic.
Family
The passion of Rita and Virgilio drove Tua Rita’s success in the vineyard and cellar, but its image and marketing flourished thanks to Stefano Frascolla, Simena’s husband. Following Virgilio’s passing in 2010, Stefano assumed a leading role in managing the winery, ensuring its continued growth. In 2020, the next generation stepped in, with Giovanni Frascolla, son of Simena and Stefano, taking the helm and bringing a fresh vision.
Winemaker
Luca D’Attoma, born in Borgo San Lorenzo, served as the agronomic and winemaking consultant for Tua Rita from 1984 to 1997 and returned in 2011, continuing in his role to this day. In 2022, he was named Winemaker of the Year for Doctor Wine’s “Guida Essenziale ai Vini d’Italia 2022.” He collaborates with in-house enologist Marco Lamastra.
